A friend of mine is going to Fiji and New Zealand in March. He's a good hunter/reloader and would like to visit a good gunshop while in New Zealand.
If anyone has info it would be appreciated.

He's also a hoot to hang out with.

Cheers
Bruce

where is he going to be in NZ - pretty sure there wont be a gunshop in Fiji at all....

Location will dictate responses, although no matter where he goes my advise is dont go to Guncity at any of their locations.

South of Auckland in the suburb of Ellerslie (between the airport and the city, right off Hwy 1) you have three gun shops within a couple of blocks:

Gun City 706 Great South Road
Serious Shooters 726 Great South Road
SAI Guns and Ammo 553 Great South Road

Serious Shooters and SAI are almost right next door to each other.

You could try the HUnting and Fishing franchise stores - they are everywhere , but are not usually big on guns - more clothing and outdoors stuff and fishing stuff.

Reloaders Supplies is always worth a look , at 12 Newsome Road Onehunga. Major importer and dealer in firearms and components.

I was trying to think of true gun shops and yes Reloader Supplies would fit that description better than the more general stores mentioned above, Gun City and Hunting and Fishing. The former to me anyway is trashy and staff more supermarket style, and the latter focussing on fishing, camping and clothing, again staff generally not very knowledgeable on firearms and ammunition. The franchise owners who you usually don't see too often in the store, are usually all into hunting and fishing with their signwritten 4x4s and all the latest gears and gadgets posing in lots of self promotion photos published in the F&H national catalogue. Still their stores are well stocked with stuff and they also cater very well for kids outdoor clothing from babies to teenagers. Must admit my grandkids including latest grandson wear all the pink, blue and green camo gear, care of grandad.

We have a fairly new small gun store here where I live, open up by a former army guy who is into hunting and firearms. He offers specialist reloading services and also black powder stuff and has an indoor range in the shop. Video posted on his web page shooting a 450 Rigby in the range.
Stocks a little bit of hunting clothing and accessory gear but mostly guns, ammo and reloading stuff. Has a lot of ex military stuff on display including a working Bofors gun in the middle of the shop floor, it doesn't work in the shop of course but you can sit on it and pretend you are knocking Zeros out of the sky if you wish Big Grin

Is Sportsway still around in Auckland?

Reloaders supplies are good for new guns and mostly shotguns.

Sportways used to have more used guns as also Serious Shooters.

Serious Shooters and SAI are almost right next door to each other.

They used to be. Serious Shooters has relocated and is now only a few steps from Gun City on Great South Rd.
SAI is still in the original shop as far as I know.

Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

Didnt know Serious Shooters had moved , but then I dont go to Akl if I can avoid it anyway.

We really need to know where specifically the visitors will be so we can point them in the right direction for their location.

I used to stop by Serious Shooters and SAI pretty often. I was in there a week or so after they shot that nutter that tried to rob the place with a machete, years ago. I probably still have photos of the shop with the bullet hole in the window.

Apparently don't use a handgun to defend yourself during a knife attack either. I remember that for the next year or so the crown attorney (DA?) tried to prosecute the gun store worker for doing so.

Public opinion basically made the government back down but they made the gun shop people's lives a nightmare for a long time.

I liked Gun City in Christchurch......lots of stuff.

Hunting and Fishing .......as many of the outlets as my wife would put up with.....didn'f have a lot of stuff other than clothing/camping gear etc. Bit disappointing in firearms.

Gun City definately has guns.

Shame about the lack of actual customer service , the dodgy dealings that the owner has and does , the way they use their mates to run up auction bids on their goods on our NZ on-line auction house etc etc etc.

Hunting and Fishing is a franchise who sell outdoors gear , fishing gear and some guns.

When they land at the Auckland airport they'll be about 15 miles south of downtown, Auckland. It's not the fastest route but they can drive to the three gun shops that I listed above on the way to downtown.

If they are staying in downtown Auckland for the sightseeing, the gun shops are 5 miles away.
