It may have been especially with the rape/pillage mentality of the early settlers/immigrants.
Its pretty faaarkin sad.

Not just the sellers, but pre colonialism there were some massive extinctions on both sides of the tasman.
Man what I wouldn't give to see a moa or Haast's eagle.
