ALASKA is a "HARD COUNTRY for OLDMEN". (But if you live it wide'ass open, balls'to the wall, the pedal floored, full throttle, it is a delightful place, to finally just sit-back and savor those memories while sipping Tequila).

Tough planes.

My uncle crashed one full of 50-caliber ammo on the banks of the Ubangi-Shari River in 1942. Hank Kristofferson (Kris’s dad) rescued the crew and they flew in mechanics, dug the plane out of the sand, made the repairs and eventually flew it out. Good stuff.

Was wondering why a gear up landing? If he still had an engine running he should have had hydraulic pressure enough to get the gear down. Would have saved 2 engine rebuilds.

I don't know for 100% sure. But one reason is lowering the gear would have increased the "drag". As it was they were so low they took out the tops of the trees on approach. They just barely made it to the runway.

Yup. Something was off that they couldn't maintain speed and altitude. Landed with the dead engine low, with is not how you normally fly with a failed engine. Or the video just shows the final moments as they clawed for the runway. Still.
