RO Senate opens five-year hunting season for brown bears

26 September 2019

Romania Insider

Romania’s Senate has passed a bill under which, for a period of 5 years, hunting brown bears is no longer restricted to annual quotas approved by the Environment Ministry, Profit.ro reported.

The bill was sent to the Chamber of Deputies, which will have the final vote.

Under the current legislation, bear hunting is prohibited in Romania, with the Environment Ministry approving hunting quotas each year, for scientific purposes or management of the bear population.

MPs of the ruling Socialist Party - PSD and ethnic Hungarians’ party - UDMR supported the derogation from the European bear protection directive, emphasizing the benefits of the project for farmers (who suffer losses caused by bears).

In contrast, senators of the opposition Save Romania Union (USR) pointed out that the project violates the European Habitats Directive therefore it risks being declared unconstitutional, including because it lacks an opinion from the European Commission.

The only group that abstained from voting the bill was the one of the USR MPs, while the other parties, including the opposition, voted for the project.

I was at an after dinner business get together one evening with a group of clients from all over Europe. The topic they were discussion was the EU and Brexit.

One individual from Germany (who is a friend of mine even though he is a Liberal) was arguing in favor of the EU and the subject of sovereignty and how the UK could not be "allowed" to leave.

He made the comment:

"Europe must be united as a single country in order to project their influence throughout the world"

Everyone looked at him silently except me - I replied " You know, your country tried that once before and we know how that turned out" .

That more or less ended that discussion..

The EU is all about Globalism and it is scary how many people believe it is a good thing....

No its about an inner market as one european country cant have big enough market inside their own country. US already has the size to keep a market for products by their own.

In the beginning it may have been a good idea...

But now you have a non-elected organization issuing policies on things like Privacy, Trophy Import, Firearms regulations, Wildlife management to sovereign nations... Since when do any of those issues have the slightest thing to do with trade or free markets???

It may have started out with the best of intentions but the end game is obvious in my opinion - and they will use the power of the Euro to make it happen..

Who comes out on top? Uh... the two biggest economic powers - France and Germany. All the "little" countries" are just fleas on the big dogs..

Welcome to the Union of NOT SOVIET Socialist Republic....

Best thing that can happen would be for the wheels to completely fall off..
