Hi Leo,
in Germany there is a kind like hunting Ranch call " Jagdgatter" but this is not hunting.
There is no Licence-hunting here in Germany because the right of hunt is linked to the ground and is the only right of the land-owner, does'nt matter goverment owned land or private. For hunting on your on land you need a minimum of 75 hectares= round about 185 acres otherwise you and your land have to be member of a "Jagdgenossenschaft" = cooperative and there is the minimum of hunt ground 250 hectares= 617 acres. We call that "Revier"= hunting district. The holder of the right to hunt( Goverment, big Farmers, cooperatives) can ( and do it) lease you the right of hunt, contracts running 9 years ( by law).

hunting in Europe is not in all countries the same. UK, France, Austria, Italy, Spain a.s.o, every country got their on hunting tradition, laws, seasons and/or game.

I only can tell how hunting in germany is, very very regulated. First of all you have to make a "Jagdschein" ( hunting-license) which you can make at you local hunters association ( takes round one year in bavaria near 2, costs between 600 $ and 1000 $ or in a hunting school takes 6-8 weeks and cost you 4500-7000 $. There is a goverment qualified graduation. Our amercican hunters over here have to do the same course, they do it in 6 weeks.( US-Forces)
After this you can go hunt in Germany..if someone give you the occasion or you have a friend with hunting district. you are not able to hire your on district in the first 3 years after graduation. as a foreigner you can get a 2 weeks permit or from some countries a german auslaender-jagdschein.

We got a federal hunting law and 16 state-hunting law within the federal law. That means game and hunting season can be diffeent. I live in the state Hesse ( Frankfurt is the biggest city and for american, australians and japanese Ruedesheim on the Riber Rhine the well knowest .
this is what we have to hunt in hesse( the is a little bit more small games but i did'nt translate all)

that's Germany.. we have a law for every bull****. But serious.. I think it's quite ok regulate hunting.. so we can hunt around the year and there is enaugh left for the next season.The
"Abschu�plan" , a kind of plan, where the county hunting administration office give you the how much you can shoot from red deer, fallow deer, mufflon in your district. the figure they give you is your max. Limit and they give you a figure how much you have to shoot from roe deer (e.g. 6 roe deer per 100 hectare= 247 acres) .. if i shoot less maybe i pay more for damage on trees to the forestry administration. also we have compensate the damage on the fields or loss on crop to the farmers. Not all but damage made by Red deer, fallow deer, Roe deer, Wild pigs
