I am sure many of you have made your own hunting knife

Care to share your creation ?

I would love to attempt such a project

I guess I am also running out of calibers to buy or commission

Whats the best place to get the starting components in Europe ?

I can easily order a few f1's And it's variation

But it's nothing compare to making it myself

Ghubert better put a chain around your lansky

If you've never done it before perhaps you should start with a kit which requires mostly finishing and assembly. You can buy total kits , or finished blades which you then attach handles etc ,or you couild go the whole distance -steel, grind and heat treat etc.
One good part place in Europe is www.brisa.fi
There is at least one knife forum in the UK where you might find loacal sources .

Me ? I just advise makers how to HT and forge blades [as a metallurgist ] and let them make knives for me ! Wink Getting together with a maker to make 'my knife ' is fine for me but if you have talents have at it !

I have one knife from the same knife maker as the pick Sölvi posted. This one here is mine:

And Londonhunter ! About the Damaskus blade....it’s not a pattern.....the blade is made from hammered layers of steel, like the Samurai swords.
You can visit his website here: http://icelandicknives.com and his name is Johann Vilhjalmsson

Dig made me a knife a few years ago that is buried somewhere in my office. I gave him a piece of Antler from a Fallow I shot as the handle material and it works a treat.

It's also one of those blades that you can sharpen on the nearest five bar gate and that would get the edge back on it!!

I prefere the shorter 11-12 cm blades,

no fancy stuff,

both those in the pics are laminated carbon steel, needs a bit of tending, will take well to being sharpened and stays sharp.

That is all I ask for really, both knifes would be possible to set about makeing at home should one so desire.

Chris;
A very kool knife complimented nicely by the sheath.
That is a mighty interesting handle what is it made from.

DIY knifemaking is quite achievable if you start from a kit blade.
lots of choices available worldwide in blade shape & material.
blademaking is a skill all in itself & seriously not to be entertained with expectations of even moderate excellence without years of skill development for the complex material types like damascus..........or even learning the heat treating skills required for blade performance in the plain alloy steels.

making a knife from a kit blade is quite doable with only a modest input in skills and effort.

I've made quite a few knives along with many other things as a DIY tragic , as a metallurgist in a former life, always from a kit blade. I've neither the inclination , time, or expense in equipment acquisition to invest in the creation of a good blade.

Thanks Chris

He He ........I have opened this page countless times in the last few days admiring that knife & what it was made with, since you posted it.

I recently completed a S30V skinner with a handle whose material became obvious during the shaping, had been mislabled and it ended up rather plain.
The supplier is replacing the material; BUT,
I have developed a lust for replacing that handle with some timber with a grain something like yours, since seeing the pic.
The search begins.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Gents,

remember now, that is my fathers knife,

I have a few made on my own accord that is far less appealing, (ugly) that I might share a pic or two of one day should I be drunk or others vise impaired,

A good thing about nice knifes, and pics there of is that one gets a sensation of the better things in life.

Btw this one is for sale,

Made by the same man,

alternative ivory, rose wood and silver in the handle, carbon steel 58 Hrc 8.8 cm blade, total lenght 21 cm, sheet, worked leather
for a cost of 177 EUR (1700 SEK)

He is a decent chap.

Having lusted after a piece of timber in the style of Chris's father's knife, posted above ,with the Masur burl handle .
I have assuaged the passion somewhat by making this one from a S30V skinner blade & some curly grained baltic birch I dyed & oiled.
( not being able to source any Masur burl in Oz).

Here's another one in a larger Skinner on an AUS8A cryo quenched blade with handles made from Aussie Ringed Gidgee ( a member of the Acacia family)

The artistic concept & execution is brilliant on the folders she is engraving.

does she make the knives herself or just the engraving.

my knives are DIY just for myself or friends as gifts, from blades I purchase.

2 chef/cooks blades arrived yesterday to finish for my eldest son.

Denis,

I think it is a bit of both. From what I remember she makes items from scratch and also does commission work to individualise personal items.

I've been toying with getting a kit or two to make some knives with but there just aren't enough hours in the day right now. Perhaps when the season is over.

Rgds,
Kiri

My mate John Foxwell makes these working knives. Here is mine when new. It has been to Africa twice and is my go to knife.

There will be more than one Foxwell knife around on my next outback camel hunt.

Very nice
stylish sheath too.
Lots of skill required to make your own blades.
Your mate did a fabulous job.

For those with the urge to have a go at DIY with this style of blade shape, they are available in a similar shape from Jantz in the US .
The model I used in the 1st pic in my post is a 'Silver Moose' - 3" blade available in AUS8A, D2, or S30V.
