Now that bison are ranched, I am curious and interested whether bison are susceptible to prion diseases as are cattle, sheep, deer, and elk. "Scabies" corrected to "Scrapie" - courtesy of Grumulkin. Scabies is not caused by a prion but rather by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scrapie is caused by a prion. | |||

I would expect bison are susceptible to BSE same as cattle. A little research on the internet should reveal the answer. | |||

BSE is very rare in cattle, lot of theories about origins and spreading, but no on knows for sure. Haven't had a case in Canada in years and when one shows up, it's a BIG deal. Links to animal based feeds are suspected and feeding these has been banned in most jurisdictions. Wild bison here are carriers of TB and anyone who shoots one is required to have it tested. Well, "years" might be a stretch, since the latest of 20 total known cases in Canada was in Feb 2015. As you said, very rare and hardly something to stay awake at night worrying about. And, the answer is, yes Bison can have BSE. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Scrapie is most prevalent in sheep and goats. Our sheep are in the scrapie program that is overseen by APHIS (Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service). They furnish us with numbered ear tags and before we sell or trade any of our animals we tag all of them. If we take them to a sale barn they have to be tagged and if not the sale barn tags them for a fee per animal. The biggest concern most people have concerning buffalo is with Brucellosis. Buffalo can be carriers of Brucellosis and the cattle industry has for decades to get the various states declared Free. Even the rocks don't last forever. | |||
