lindy2,

Midwest Knife Supply has some reasonably priced contact wheels. I have had good luck with the 8" and 10" polyurethane wheels I purchased from them.

Bunch of years back when I was poorer than I am now but had more money.
I made the wheel out of white oak. It didn't like the heat and I couldn't keep the corners from giving out.
A drive or idler might work though.

Given the rate they are turning, it would be interesting to see (from a distance) what would happen if a wood contact wheel developed a crack and let go.

LIndy, it takes money to make money. Spend it, but a wheel that you are not guessing at or risking life and limb.
I understand about trying to save money, for heavens sakes, my wife rewashing ice cubes, but there are some things you do not risk.

Grizzly wheels are too small. I want something at least 14 inches and maybe even 16 inches. To buy one like that is close to $500.00.

Not doing it for money. Just want to try it out as a hobby, and strictly for my own use. (anybody got a good used belt grinder for sale for cheap?)

I think I found the answer.
