Interesting! Have you tried any heavier TSX bullets in the 300WM?

I have had my 300 Win Mag for only a year now, but it really likes Nosler 165gr BTs on top of 68.5 gr of Re22 in a Win case and Federal 215 primer
according to my "el cheapo" Chrony I get 3250 FPS with very little deviation.

Awesome groups JWP, simply awesome!!!

To Peter: I have never failed to retreive a deer shot with 150 grain Barnes Triple Shock. I previously used Federal Premium 180 grain Nosler Partition in a factory load. Very accurate bullet. I didn't like the way they expanded and the loss of bullet weight.

My utility load is 72.0 gr. of IMR-4350 under a 180 gr. Speer GS, Winchester brass and a Federal 215. Right at 3050 fps and groups 5/8" - 1 1/4" in a Ruger MKI, a Ruger MKII and a Model 70. Drops whitetails just about like you'd think it would.

We have recently tried 165 Barnes XXX WITH 78 grains Reloader 22. 1 1/2 inches high at 100 yds. and dead on at 300 yds. HORNADY interbond 150 grain bullet has also been very accurate, however, I have had actual experience with the Barnes bullet and will continue to use it.

Killadeaux, I tried your RL22 load (ie. 78 grains) with 168gr. TSX's today. Wonderfully accurate in a rifle (Win mod 70) that had previously disappointed in terms of accuracy.
Thanks very much!
Peter.

Killadeaux, no I haven't. I just shot for groups. Now that I have a good load, the chrono is the next step. I am still looking for a good 180 grain TSX load. I have some good (180gr) Nosler Partition loads but thought I might find something better with the 180 TSX's.

Two yearsa ago, I put a Hart barrel on my old 300 Win Mag that previously had a Douglas barrel. My old recipe of 150 grain Barnes XXX and 78 grains of Reloader 19 didn't shot as accurately in the Hart barrel. After experimenting with different bullets and powders, we finally ended up with a 165 grain Hornady Interbond and 77.5 grains Reloader 22.

Belgium Browning .300 Win Mag / 180-grain Hornady SP / 75 grains RL-22 / WW brass / Fed 215 / OAL 3.260" / 3000 fps

Got this by 'Find' and Google search at 24hrcmpfre
and "load development" stopped at the above. (Hornady book shows this as a midrange load, but other books were more conservative. Norma MRP actually cited in third edition, p.245. RL-22 is the exact same powder per A-Square's "Any Shot You Want", p.274 )

I use 76.0 grains of RL22 with 180 grain TSX bullets, and Federal magnum large rifle primers. The Oehler chronograch shows 3075 fps in both a Win 70 supergrade and a Kimber 8400.
Nice ragged one hole groups when I do my job.

WW brass, Federal 215 primer,180 Nosler partition, max load of H-4831. My rifle takes a couple grains over max, but yours may not. Velocity 3050fps, accuracy sub-moa. Rifle, stock Rem. 700 with barrel floated. This load hits very hard, I've taken several elk, caribou and bears with it.

80-81 grains of H1000 under 180 Ballistictips, Partitions, A-Frames and sometimes Hornadys. Its good for 3150 fps in my 26" barrels and makes a good long range hunting load. 79-80 grains under a 190 SMK or Berger was my match load for awhile.

I get the same speeds with Reloader 22 with great short-range accuracy, but it always seems to start falling apart by 400.

I am currently using the ladder method to develop a 300 WM load using 180 Hornady Interbond, Fed 215 Mag primer, Winchester Brass (4th loading), and testing Reloader 22, Reloader 19, and IMR 4831 powders. I may also test IMR 4350. I am loading 10 rounds, at evenly divided increments between starting and 1 gr under max loading. It probably won't mean much for any other rifle, but it should be interesting to see what the most accurate loadings are doing over the chronograph. This is the first time I have used the ladder method, so I am also testing the method.

I burned out several 300 WM's shooting 78 grs./ H-4831 and a 180 gr. bullet. That load was extremely accurate in both of my barrels. Start 10% lower and work up carefully. I don't think that most modern manuals go that high currently.

No they do not! Most only go to 73-74 grs. I read a John Brsness article where he said 75-grs was the best load he had with his 300's. Any preassure signs? I have some 73-75 grs loaded to try out. I had no issues up to 73grs.

This was why I was asking about the choice of primer. The last couple Lyman Reloading Manuals use a Large Rifle Primer for their data... the last couple Hornaday Manuals use a Large Rifle Magnum primer. And, the data differs significantly when approaching the max load. I have chosen to use Magnum primers for the 300 WM, simply based upon the amount of powder that the cartridge burns. As soon as I get a few loads to fine tune, I will run them across the chrony to determine if my theory, that the Mag primer will be most efficient, holds true.

My 300 Win. Mag. Load.
Winchester Brass, Federal 215M Primer, 75 gr H4350, 180gr Nosler Accubond. Overall length 3.390.
Velocity thru my RCBS graph has it at 3150 fps.

I moved to the H4350 in 2012 during the Sandy Hook frenzy because there was no IMR 4350 available.
75gr of IMR 4350 would produce 2,850 fps thru my RCBS graph, everything else being the same, case bullet primer bullet and length. Just a switch out to the H4350 on the powder.
The H4350 powder is producing 300 fps more than the IMR 4350. Seems like a huge gain to me, I'll take it.
The group sizes are also much smaller with the H4350 powder by 50%. 1 moa to 1/2 moa.

Rifle: 1989 Dakota Arms 76, wood stock, stainless shilen match .308 1-10, #2, 24"

71 grains of IMR4350 and a 180 grain Sierra GameKing is a well known accurate load for the 300 Win Mag.

300 WM Sako 85 Grey Wolf (24.6" 1:11 barrel): recently sighted in with 130gr TTSX at 3800 fps mv. Load based on Barnes data. Shoots pretty flat out to ~450 yards. Hyper speed eager to try it out. Hornady 130gr SP launched not quite as fast worked pretty good on Bighorn Sheep.

It makes little difference what bullet or load you shoot on deer with a 300 win mag..they all work, mostly because your somewhat over gunned for deer IMO..Its a great elk round IMO..My favorite bullet in any of the 300s is the Nosler partition 200 gr. or the 200 gr. Accubond, both are elk hammers.

Id as soon use my 30-06 with 150 and 180 gr bullets for elk and deer. That combo has never failed me..and the 200 gr accubond is a darn good elk round in the 06 at 2700 fps..

Just when u learn all the answers, they CHANGE the questions. Try to get any Reloader 22! Bought about 3/4 lb off a table at a recent Gunshow. ($50). And if they have any of the “new” powders at the Gunshop, u need a new reloading manual, also unobtainium.
Thanks for this thread. I’m getting some very good ideas.

72.5g H4831sc and a 190 gr Nosler Custom Competition (SMK twin). good accuracy at .76" 5 shot group.

Velocity was a bit disappointing at 2843. Going to bump it up a notch to max 73 grains.

Anyone else notice that a lot of people load the 4831 hotter than the manuals list? Like, a lot hotter! I see guys posting 78 gr with a max 73 grain of H 4831sc.

In H4831 loads for my 300 Win Mag, shooting Barnes TTSX 180 gn I am generally loading at book max levels but getting higher velocity than books suggest. Like 100 - 200 fps higher. I know, a different bullet and weight to yours so not comparing apples to apples. But conversely whenever I tried IMR 4350 velocity was always less than books show. Is this showing the makers have improved the H4831 formula slightly... ?
With the 180 gn TTSX my charge is about as much as the case can take to being even slightly compressed ( loaded for a Tikka magazine length ) but I've not seen excessive pressure signs. I think a max load would be more than the case can hold. I think if you can get that extra 1/2 grain into your case it would be OK.
Yes, I too have seen some posting higher than max book charges for H4831 / 300 Win Mag. I always assumed they were loading long rounds for long throated barrels.

Its easy to get ultra high velocity out of the 300 Win, a great big game round up to an including the big bears..The prime bullet to kill with it is the 200 gr. Accubond or Partition..
