I have a 09 that is being stocked by Kobe right now.
Lapour did the metal work and the action was heat treated in the Burgess manner.
I plan on loading 225g NPs or ABs.
I have Imr 4064, 4895, RL 15, Varget and slower burning powders.
The new Nosler data shows 2750-2800 fps. Seems high based on my research. Is it ? Any load/data would be welcome. Thank you.

A few years back I had a custom 6mm built on an 09, and after shooting it for awhile, it just didn't interest me that much. I had it rebarreled with a 23" Douglas to a .35 Whelen.
I started reloading it with IMR4895 and never had a reason to change. At the time, Nosler BT's were available in .35 caliber in 225 grain. In fact, .35 Whelen was printed on the bullet box.
After a few test loads, I settled on 55.5 grains of IMR4895, extremely accurate......3 shot groups at 100 yards of 1/2-3/4" all the time. Through a chrono, I never could get anywhere close to 2750-2800, but at just over 2600, it was VERY deadly!
I had read a lot of good things about the cartridge, and after using it on mostly hogs and a few blacktail deer, I am a true believer!
I wish you the best with your new rifle, and coming from Kobe, it has to be pretty darn nice.

Thanks for the response. Kobe built me a 257 Roberts on a 09. That is why he got hired again !

I have a Ruger tang safety Whelen that I've had good luck with Reloader 15 and 225 grain bullets. I don't have my load data with me, but as I recall it was most accurate at just slightly less than the maximum with Barnes and Nosler bullets. I've always wanted to try Sierras, but never got around to it with them. I've always liked 4895, but haven't tried it in the Whelen. I've used 4064, and accuracy was good, but velocities were slower and trajectories a bit more curved. So I stuck with 15. I've never tried Varget, but have heard good things about it in the Whelen.

My favorite is RL15 200-250gr bullets and have also had good loads with 748Win and 4064 IMR.

Ooooh, this is very useful information as I have a Remington 700 in .35 Whelen that I haven't shot yet.

I have several powders that are at least "suitable": IMR 4895 and 4320, H4895 and Varget, and some RelodeR 15... though I'll probably save the 4320 for my .405 Winchester since it *LOVES* it.

2700-2800 is doable with a 225 grain bullet. It will be 60K PSI range like a 270 Win thought. Most Whelen loads are down around the 50K range. Your gun's mileage may vary as they say!
AA-2015 is what I used to get 2821fps with a Barnes X using data out of their first edition manual. 25" barrel Shot well and killed great but I have since ceased loading that gun in that manner.

I use the 225 gr X but assume running up to the 60 grs of RE-15 will work with you choice of bullets. Mine run 2700 fps out of a 22" barrel.

I am starting w/ RL15. 56, 56.5, 57, 57.5 & 58g w/ the Sierra 225 for testing.
I bought some Nosler 225 AB factory loads (on sale) for comparison.
Interestingly, the little ballistic chart on the box gives them 2750 fps. We'll see.

Finally got to the range yesterday . It was a good day.
58g of RL 15 gave me a .702 group @ 100 yds using a 5x scope.
The speed gun said 2529 fps w/ an Es of 9. Slower than I expected.
The factory Nosler 225 AB loads also averaged well below the advertised 2750 giving me a 2500 avg vel, but the primers were severely flattened.
Not sure if I have a slow barrel, slow lot of powder or what, but it is accurate.

After trying several, I've found RL 15 to be the most accurate powder in my 35 Whelen. I shoot both the Barnes X 225 and the Northfork 250 for African PG with desvastating results. As for velocity with the 225, I've never been able to get better than an average of 2620FPS through 5 shot strings using 58 grains in my particular rifle.

Loaded the 225 SBT over 59g of RL 15. Speed gun said 2569 fps w/ good groups. Shot then in wet books. Avg 15-18 inches w/ great expansion and all mushroomed big and held together. I'll go to 60g and clock them again. Should get me 2600fps. That will do.

Varget and Accurate 2520 have been the best for me with 225 gr bullets (Partition and Accubond) in my Whelen AI. With either powder in a standard Whelen, start at 53 grains and work up to max.

60g RL 15 w/ 225g SBT gave me 2677 fps on my speed gun. They grouped well also. I'm done w/ my load work up.

Texas, Don't stop now! It's just too much fun to find other loads that shoot well... just in case they do something stupid, like stop making RL 15, or something like that! This load is chonographed at 2650 fps.

You are welcome, Texas.

Just have all the fun you can with it... it was a wonderful thing to take the 35 to the turkey shoot, and bust an egg at 100 yds (off hand)... if you don't mind having people looking at you funny... LOL!!

Merry Christmas to you, also.

Good results with H4895 and the TSX 200 gr bullet in my Remington 750 35 Whelen carbine (18.5" barrel) at around 2600 fps muzzle velocity. Reloder 15 also works well with this bullet.

Since I am awash in IMR4895 pulldown I would prefer to use it. How much did you end up using with the 200 gr Barnes TSX ? I would figure 56 or 57 gr? I plan on trying 54-58 and then mess with seating depth based on what charge works best. I don't to waste any bullets since they are so expensive. When it gets "good enough" I will stop playing with loads.

I also see that charges (pressure wise) look the same for the newer TSX bullets as lead core bullets. Is that others' experience?

The most fun gun you will ever shoot-- a Remington 7600 pupmp in 35 Whelen. 2650 with 60 gr. RL-15 in a 22 inch barrel. Darn near knocks deer off thier feet with a 225 Ballictic Tip. Optik1

Thanks, guys, you are helping me keep my deep faith in the .35 Whelen. I have a Remington 700 Classic in .35 Whelen and, in my opinion, it has the power of the .338 Win Mag with the recoil of a 30/06. I took it to Zimbabwe in 2001 with 250 gr Partitions at 2586 fps that shot into 1". It killed like lightning. I won't bore you with the shot details but my PH said if I wanted to shoot a Cape Buffalo on the next trip, he would sign off on me using the Whelen, he was that impressed with the results and the lack of recoil.
Of note: despite the Remington's 1:16 twist, it shoots 300 gr Barnes Originals at a leisurely 2150 fps into 3/4" at 100 yards with NO signs of tipping. I want to take this opportunity to dispel the commonly held belief that, at least in my rifle, the 1:16 won't stabilize the heavy 300 grainers.

Shot with the 35 Whelen a little over a week ago. The hole is the exit wound... it was a real bang/flop.

I have only one load for my Whelen, and that's the 225 gr. Nolser partition at just a hair over 2700 FPS..It shoots 1/2 inch for 3 shots or 5...recoil is mild and its as good a killer as any other caliber as far as I can tell. It shoots the 250 gr. HOrn. SST and Nosler partition as well but neither penetrate anymore that the 225 Nosler to my surprise..

I may give the Accubond a try at some point when I get bord with the perfection of the 225 partition bullet.. Roll Eyes

Worked up to 56.0 grains of BLC-2 under the 250 grain Hornady RN and got great accuracy, primers beginning to flatten and recoil that reminded me of my old 338 Win mag. Accuracy excellent.
