I broke down and bought some new riding chinks. I have always used neatsfoot oil to condition and protect them.

Is there a better product available?

Thanks.

I like SnoSeal. Neatsfoot oil is not the greatest waterproof agent.

I have a tub of SnoSeal that I use on some Sorel boots, but I never thought of using it on chinks.

I went ahead and applied Neatsfoot oil fairly liberally and if nothing else, it darkened the chinks up and made them look a little better IMO.

Thanks.

IN the summer neatsfoot will soak through to your pants and skin...It will also rot stitching.

I use horsehide butt ends slick side out year around and I don't treat it..same with saddle seat, neatsfoot underneath and wax on top..A good pair of chinks will last a lifetime or two before they rot with minimum care..If I were to use anything is would be saddle soap to clean them every 5 years, wiped dry.

Once you wear out 2 pair of chaps in a lifetime your pretty close to looking UP at the dirt! and 99.9 today don't get through one pair. no need to treat them! old

Neats foot oil is horrible stuff. It doesn't waterproof anything.

Better off using Ray Holes Chap Wax Waterproofing, or boot grease like Obenauf's

The problem is so many chaps or chinks are rough side out, and soak up water, snow, moisture in general..Slick side out horse is waterproof withing reason..I also recommend extreme lace hanging down on your boot it wipes the snow off the boots as you ride and helps keep your feet dry..Mine is about 15 inches and works well..
