Anybody have any experience using Barnes 300gr. TSX on game in a MODERN (Ruger #1, Siamese Mauser, ETC.) .45-70?

I'm under the impression that the 300 gr TSX can and maybe should withstand velocity in the 2000 fps plus range at the muzzle.

Of course, the 458 WM and the 45-70 are capable of that and more. I have some 300 and 350 gr TSX, but haven't tested them.

My experience so far is with the Barnes TTSX 300 gr BT SOCOM bullet, which is designed for SOCOM velocity - no more than 1800 fps.

I have killed several hogs with that bullet out of my 458 WM which is set up, twist rate 1:20", short throat, to be like a 45-70 in a bolt action.

That bullet is an awesome killer, at the right speed. I don't plan to drive it faster than 1800 fps muzzle.

I think the 300 gr TSX would be great for just about anything in a 45-70 single shot rifle, loaded however you like.

There is a lot to like about the 45-70 especially for the handloader. I can't think of any other cartridge that is more versatile as far as the powder it likes and the range of bullet weights -- published and tested data.

Yes, with a Barnes 300 grain .411 TSX in my .405 WCF on Nilgai.Shot through on broadside shot. DRT.

I have found that the faster you drive the big open nose copper bullets, the more they wander.

I have a Siamese Mauser and have shot the 350gr. TSX. They are real accurate ahead of IMR 4198 at 2200+ fps. out of my 18"bbl. but I would like to get a little more velocity.

What about the 250 Mono Flex?

The Hornady 325 gr FTX also looks interesting. The load data I just looked up shows up to about 2300 fps out of the 45-70 in the third tier loads, (Ruger #1 etc.)

Just think of the Bloodshot meat with poor shot placement.

BTW, I bought a bunch of the 250 gr Hornady Mono Flex to load in my 458 SOCOM and quickly loaded up three to test function and feeding, which went well.

I haven't yet got back to it to refine the load and test for accuracy. As you probably know, the velocity of the SOCOM will be a little slower than what the 45-70 hot can do, but that's okay with me.

If I iwant that kind of velocity, I will pass on the 45-70..I mostly shoot Swift 350s and Rem 405 gr at 1800 to 1900..If I want or need 2300 fps I will opt for a 458 Win bolt gun at the magic 2400 plus. Just speaking for myself..I have no use for monoflex bullets..I see them as a gimmick, but then Im old school and can't help that!!

I've a load for the 250gr MonoFlex from my Ruger No.1H in .458 Win Mag at a modest 2610 fps using A5744. Very accurate, mild recoiling load for bear.

And, Atkinson, it's NOT the 325gr FTX, but a very tough monometal made for tough critters. If ever I wanted to, the 250gr MonoFlex could be pushed out the barrel of my .458 Win at over 3000 fps! But no need for that!

The 300 and 350 TSX bullets are also intended for speed, but I pushed them out of the Ruger No.1 in .45-70 with a long throat at 2650 fps and 2470 fps respectively. From the .458: 2980 and 2750 respectively. Either will kill anything you point them at!
