Use the book load for a 45-70 450 gr, drop one grain and work up to whatever. I would try Varget to start with..Keeping in mind the make and model of your 45-70, that is very important and stated in most books, Your have old springfields, Lever actions, Marlin 95s an win 1886 and loads vary as does pressure...My 1979 model Marlin will take a big load, The springfields and some rolling block actions work on really mild loads only..Ive never had much luck reloader 7, to my surprise!!

Just from memory 30grs of IMR 4198 gives me 1500fps out of my Ruger NO.3 22 inch barrel.

Using a 460gr bullet out of a lee mold.

I think max was around 40grs but check for yourself.

My hunting load in my 1979 Marlin is 49 grs of IMR-4198 with 405 gr. rem sp and the 350 gr.swift for 1900 to 2000 fps...50 grs worked also, but I cut back a gr. for old times sake or what ever..gun kicks like a pack mule for sure..

Look in your loading manual; they all have three levels of loads;
1: Trapdoors.
2: New Marlins (meaning after 1973)
3: Rugers and Siamese Mausers.
Barnes only has two; they figure no one wants to shoot Barnes bullets out of a Trapdoor Springfield.
You didn't say what rifle you have.
