What are in your opinion, the greatest combinations of cartridges and guns. Please be specific on the make and model of the gun.
For example 577 NE and Purdey chopper lump barreled DR or 425 WR and WR bolt action integral magazine rifle etcetera.

In bolt actions I'd vote for: 1) a .275 Rigby Mauser and 2) a .375 H&H in a pre-'64 Winchester model 70.

I'll just take my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. It's good for everything from rabbits to elephants. It's accurate, reliable, nice to shoot offhand, and things don't get up!

Interesting how tastes can vary so much, I wouldn't swap my old Gevarm 22 semi auto for that 425 WR in fact I wouldn't take it if offered for free. Workmanship maybe perfect but to me everything on that rifle is yuk. I just don't appreciate decoration on what to me is just a tool.
Purely my opinion on the rifle not on those that may appreciated and use it.

Jones underlever, back action locked double rifle by R. B. Rodda in 8-bore and 4-bore in fully rifled guise. From I have seen, Army Navy did a great job with 8-bore doubles too.

Holland and Holland Royal Grade in 577 Nitro Express 3” or 3.25”. I was lucky enough to inspect the one built for Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke at the DSC show a couple of years ago. What a beautiful work of art!

Granite Mountain Arms Magnum Mauser action built by Ryan Breeding in a 4-shot 505 Gibbs with 22” barrel.

Mauser Mark X long action built by Frank Wells in the express rifle style chambered in 375 H&H.

Husqvarna Model 46 small ring Mauser chambered in 9.3x57.

Factory Mauser model A chambered in 7x57.

1908 Mannlicher carbine, Full-stocked in caliber 6.5x54MS

Winchester Model 53 lever action with half magazine, 22” barrel, chambered in 25-20.

Old model Ruger Vaquero, either bone stock chambered in 45 Colt or built by John or Dustin Linebaugh with a 4” barrel converted to 5-shot 500 Linebaugh.

And just for the record…1911s are supposed to be chambered in 45 ACP…

Shoot the largest caliber you can shoot well, and practice, practice, practice.

Personally I like a .500 NE double. Mine just happens to be a Merkel which will draw ire here from some. I originally got it to just try a double but it fits me well, has been reliable, is light and handy, easy to load for and is accurate for a double.

Thus, a .500 NE double and a .375 H&H M70 Winchester with a Swarovski 1.7 — 10 Z6i (this particular scope is integral to my pairing).

Had my pick of 3 550 Safari Americans 12-15 years back, .375 H&H, .416 Rigby and .458 Lott. I went with the .375, as it was to be more of a larger bore fun gun and far more economical to shoot than the other two. Turned out even with the heavier factory loads, recoil is less than my old Win 70 featherweight 30-06

It seems I’ve gravitated to a couple of favorites:

Big bore: Dakota Safari 404 Jeffery @ 8.5 lbs.

Med. bore: Dakota Classic Deluxes in
1) 338-06
2) 338 WM
3) 35 Whelen
4) 9.3x62
5) 375 H&H

AS far as a safari rifle, I mostly took my 404 Jefferys and my 338 Win. It covered all the bases, but I also took a double in 450-400 or .470, or 450-3.25 many times..but the doubles were nostalgia for the most part..and there were times I took a 375 H&H or 9.3x62, and various other calibers, I like using different calibers and digging for bullets, thats part of the game.

There is no "greatest" of combinations just combinations..the results for that matter seldom change one way or the other, within reason all the combinations work equally well..

You would fondle it for a couple of weeks and have it sold the next day !

Is there a specific purpose or job the combination needs to be able to do? And does it have to be just two firearms?

If it's just "stuff you would like to own but can't until you win the lotto", my list would be something like this:
1) My home-built 7x57 falling block "brush rifle".
2) A companion in just about any of the old Nitro .450's.
3) A good long-range rifle, probably on another home-built falling block (the one described in the thread "Falling block accuracy" in the single shots section, or perhaps a "Green meanie".
4) Some sort of target .22, perhaps a BSA International.
5) A fully-silenced bolt-action oddity in .300 Whisper or similar, just for plinking.
6) A '92-copy lever-action in .45 Colt or .44 Mag
7) An original Farquharson-actioned match rifle.
8) a WWSD2020
9) A silenced MP5

And hand-guns:
1) A Freedom Arms Casul in .454.
2) A Laugo Alien
3) A pair of 5.5" Ruger Vaqueros in .44 Mag
5) A good modern .22 target pistol.
6) An XP100 or something similar.

Just an eclectic bunch of interesting-to-me stuff really.

Gotcha’

OK. I’m a bolt action guy. So for me, I guess it would be a 416Rigby on a Rigby Magnum rifle, or a 404Jeffery on a Jeffery rifle. Both of course would be Mauser Magnum 98s.

I guess my answer hasn’t changed then, the 416 Rem and the m 70 action were made for each other.

I don’t know if that is true, but I have one. I need to shoot it more. I could say that about the greatest combination of cartridges and guns I have though.

If this isn’t nice what is?

So my vote would be:

22lr - the great all rounder and teacher that should be in every cabinet.

7mm - 7x57 is the grand daddy, 7x64 or 280 if you want a little more reach / thump, 7mm-08 if you want modern ballistics in a factory cartridge - and depends which side of the pond you are. But you could make same argument for 308 win - and you can get ammo anywhere.

375 H&H or Ruger for big grumpy game, where a 7mm is not really adequate/ allowed.

And depending on where you are, what you do etc you could add a 223 as a supremely versatile small bore that can do things you shouldn’t really do. I would however make sure it has a faster twist barrel. And a big bore thumper for back up 416 or a 458 - probably really only useful for a guide, or somebody who is a serious safari hunter.

Most of all I agree with lavaca. I married a red head so I Am biased.

As to best combo -

I have several.

1. Blaser R8 in .375HH and .300 WM . Change barrels and scopes in 5 minutes. Compact, easy to travel with, seriously accurate.

2. Winchester M70 action on a custom in 375HH and .280 REM or 7x57.Two guns. Twins

3. Mauser or M70 action on custom in .375HH and .300HH. Drop box if possible. Twins.

I struggle to shoot .416 and above accurately. I struggle to shoot small calibers accurately for some reason. My “happy place” is between .264 and .375 for some reason.
