Ron, there are a few icons on the top of each post, the third one over should provide a drop down that says reply with quote.

Last time I was in GNG, they still had one of the 505's on the rack.

I'm hoping to have my 500 Jeffrey shooting some time this year, but haven't recieved a firm date on when I'll get the barreled action, then I need to do the rail and magazene work and stock it, in amongst all the upcoming summer activities. I've just been looking into a halibut charter, this clear weather sure makes one think about summer, even if it was -3 this morning.

I have fired 84 mm carl gustav rifle as well. (Sorry, couldt resist)

But for what?
Nobody used these cannons for hunting dangerous game in africa, as a thread started by Nikudu months ago indicated.
I hunted elephants with my .500 Jeffery.

Norbert,

I noticed I got no replies to my second post, which dealt with the question you are now asking. Specifically I asked; Have you shot any game with that 505+?

I have shot several buffalo with a 505 Gibbs many years ago. I now use a 500 AHR for bison and if all goes according top plan bear and moose in the near future. Personally I feel the recoil of these rifles is a bit heavy for most shooters to handle. Particularly from a recovery stand point. Their "knock down" or "stopping power" however is without equal. In my opinion the 45's and even the 475's are poor substitutes. I realize that you feel they do not offer enough penetration. The Gibbs and the AHR, as well as. the 585 and 577 T Rex can easily be loaded up to 2500+ fps with monolithic solids of appropriate weight (SD of .32) and will penetrate deep enough on any thing that still walks this earth. Of course the recoil is shall we say STIFF.

For most hunters I would agree with you that a 458 Lott or 416 Remington, Rigby, etc would be a far better hunting rifle for dangerous game.

I am just a wannabe. Shooting 470's 500 A-square has me hooked.

Does my 54 Cal muzzleloader allow me interim membership?

Todd E,

referring to my ideas, the .510 calibers of course have enough penetration, if properly loaded and good shot placement. Only in emergency and with raking shots the hot .458 and .416 are better with respect to penetration.
I hunted with both calibers from impala to elephant and observed no difference in killing ability. The only difference was, that angled shots on elephant heads went through with .458, whereas the .510 stuck under the opposite hide.

My vote is for shoulder fired .50 cal rifles only. Fired a 21 lb 50 cal BMG with wood stock, so it can be done, but it is not a hunting rifle except for those with sufficient grit to haul that monster around.
Have a 500 AHR ordered, but will not be available for my Aussie buffalo hunt in three weeks. What a pity. [Mad]
Have not shot anything with a .500 to date [Embarrassed] , so will have some catching up to do. Always interested in proper loads and bullets for max section density and penetration with this caliber when the time comes.

I don't quite qualify for membership of the 500+ club......yet, but I do have both a .500 Jeffrey and a .585 Nyati under construction.

I regularly shoot a .416 Rigby and .470 Nitro but am sweating on the two 500+ rifles!

I guess I have the same obsession, bigger and better. 50-70 Trapdoor, two 50-110's a HiWall and a 30"bbl 1886, and the new baby my ego made me do it....510 Kayser Express. Think of it as the 510 Wells but minus the steenkeen belt...belts are to hold up mens pants not complicate their reloading and headspacing.

Interboat, any details on the 4-bore?

I've shot about 60 rnds from 800-1200fps with 4 7/8 ounce conicals. I love those big holes in the target!

Also, 50AK, 577/500, 10 bore.
