10 gauge auto loaders
Gents:
Can a modern 10 gauge auto loader handle the older 2 7/8 Remington or Winchester shells? I know many 12 gauge auto ahotguns can fire and eject 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2 inch shells; so can a 10 auto do the same? I ask as I have accumulated amost two cases of the Win. & Rem. 2 7/8 shells, lead shot and mostly #4s and I'd like to shoot them up. I wanted to use them on turkey in the Lower 48 but I won't live that long. So, I thought about a shotgun like the SP-10 to use up this ammo on turkey, clays, etc. Your thoughts...
Thanks for your time.
Cal

If wanting to shoot 2 7/8 loads in a 3 1/2 10 gauge, I would suggest a Browning BPS 10 gauge.

I love the 10 gauge BPS. Turkeys and coyotes do not.

That is a good question. I have an Ithaca Mag 10 and have never tried any of my 2-7/8 reloads in it. I do know that when the Ithaca was introduced it was designed around the old 3.5" rolled crimp shells. Shortly after introduction everyone started using a pie crimp and the big auto had digestion problems with these. Ithaca did some redesign and fixed the problem. My gun was an early one and they asked for it back so they could fix the problem. When I got it back it worked flawlessly with the new ammo. I will dig around and see if I still have any 2-7/8 reloads and give them a try. Clay birds with an 11 lb 10 ga. is a lot of fun, sort of.

Tried them in a mag 10, and the ones I had worked.

Tried them in an SP10, which really is similar and no go.

Tried in a Browning Gold and 50-50.

Probably matters what the shell is loaded with/to as to function. The ones I had were some old roll crimped stuff I probably should have sold to collectors. #6 chilled lead.

I thought they might be corrosive so I scrubbed the heck out of the guns afterwards. The hulls were paper and so beat up that they were unusable after one shot. As I recall quite smoky, but not BP smoky. Probably 30 years ago...

Edit to add-

They will go bang, by work, I mean function the action for repeat shots.

Most informal trap is single shot, they will work in any of the autos for that.

They don't work in my SP-10. They do work in my double barrel Wink. My guess is you have got more than one double around.

I tried some 1-3/8 oz 2-7/8 loads in my Ithaca Mag 10 and they didn't develop enough of an impulse to cycle the action. Also they didn't want to feed from the magazine.
This might be a good excuse to buy an early 1900's British 10 bore sxs?
