For some time I've wanted to try an over and under. I've only shot an o/u once or twice a year when using a friend's gun for turkey. So, a few months ago I bought a Winchester 101 with adjustable chokes, 3" chambers, and was looking forward to shooting some clays at my home range this spring. But...

At the gun show last weekend I saw a 1952 made in Belgium Browning superposed. Round knob, 2 3/4" chambers, and fixed chokes of M and F. The quality was IMHO far superior to my 1990s 101 so I bought it and sold the 101 the next day. I don't know the average price but I sold the 101 for $400 more than the Browning so I guess I did OK.

Gentlemen, what is your opinion of the two and for $850 did I do OK on the Browning?

850 for a true, blue Belgium Superposed is a steal in my opinion.

You should send it to me. I will make a good faith effort to locate the seller, so he won’t be able to take charges.

As LHeym500 says, -IF- this is a legitimate Belgium Browning Superposed that hasn't been used to change a tire or to mix cement, 850 is a remarkable price. I'd be suspicious it might be stolen. But that's just me.

I looked on several internet sites to learn about the Browning over and under. My purchase is legit. As to it being stolen (or the possibility thereof) I purchased it from a well known gun dealer at a gun show and filled in the proper BATFE from.

It is a simple field grade with a 28" barrel with a vent rib. I understand the vent rib was a $20 upgrade. I was going to shoot clays with it today but it's raining quite hard so perhaps tomorrow.

I had to learn how to take it apart as the fore end slides forward and does not come off like my other doubles. This shotgun feels much more solid than my former 101. As I'm not a shotgun guy, my plan is to sell my 5 English doubles and keep only this Browning for grouse here in AK and perhaps pheasant in the Lower 48, and my other newly acquired shotgun, a BPS 10-gauge for turkey in the lower 48.

If anyone is looking for nice English doubles, I have the following:
Williams and Powell 10-bore (light upland 10)
Watson 12-bore
Jeffery 12-bore fowler
Needham 8-bore
Scott 8-bore with original extra 10-bore barrels

Your Gun as new and boxed retails for an honest $4–5 dollars, and folks get that price.

A Grade 1 20 from 1966 just sold for 3k, mostly new with no box and goodies.

Go look at what G&H is asking for them, but I think they sold the last Grade 1 gun.

20:gauges genetic are priced twice the equivalent grade in 12.

If your gun is really clean/95 plus blueing the bidding starts at $2,500.

You have one of the last bench, hand, made for the US market.

The Pre 64 Winchester of the US marketed shotguns.

I have two in 20ga. One is choked sk/sk. Both are 4 digit numbered, made circa 1947/8.

I still do not know if there is a better O/U made than a Browning superposed.
I prefer the mid to early 50's guns. They are heavier than the Lightenings however they have slimmer proportions in their stock design.

I was looking at one like that a few years back that was pristine about the same vintage in fact choked the same.
I think they were asking $1,600. Fit me like a glove. Returned later to buy it and it was gone.

I have a 20 gauge of that era I love but imp / Mod with a 28" barrel. Awesome for dove!

The cool thing about the Browning Superposed no one talks about is the design of the forend hinge mating surface prevents the gun from becoming “loose” at the hinge.

John Moses Browning was a genius. Everything has a purpose. You may not like a feature or understand it, but it services or solves a functional design request.

Pickers please? I know it looks like every other Grade 1, but not every other Grade 1 is your Grade 1.

The smaller gauges will bring some bit more than the 12's, but a 12 gauge Superposed in its original configuration and nice condition will typically bring closer to $2,000 than $1,000 -- and dealers aren't shy of asking much more than that.

While there are no flies on the Japanese-made Win 101 and they bring good money, effectively swapping a 101 for a Superposed and pocketing $400 in boot is virtual larceny.

You should just give me one of those English doubles to atone for your sins.
