I found an old unfired rimfire cartridge while riding in the mountains yesterday.
I have not measured it yet but it appears to be about 45 caliber , approx an inch and 3/4 OAL with a very large rim that reads F V V & Co in the center.
The case tapers to the bullet from the rim in sort of a roundish manner..
Sorry I have not taken any pics of it yet.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a 56-46 Spencer (46 caliber).

Fitch Van Vechten & Co., New York, NY

Need a photo or measurements to be sure.

Does sound like a 56-46 Spencer , the FVV certainly narrows the field down a lot.

A picture would asist , as Ray says.
