The cartridge is a 500 Revolver--also called the 500 Tranter. It is catalogue number 475-2 in the big book by Jakob Brandt. Apparently discontinued in 1939, it was a black powder load for the Webley and Tranter revolvers.

The cartouche is for the French firm Gevelot & Gaupillat who used it between 1886 and 1950.

The English .500 Revolver cartridge a.k.a .500 Tranter. Erlmeier and Brandt tell us that it was first manufactured about 1870 for Webley and Trantor Revolvers , and listed for the first time in the Kynoch 1882 catalogue. Manufactured by ( at least ) Eley , Kynoch , RWS , and found with those proprietory headstamps as well as unheadstamped . Other european makers no doubt exist.
Velocity figures of 650 ft/second . 328 ft/pds of energy .

Thank you both very much for your info. Tonight I will sleep soundly without this on my mind [Wink]
