Is this the one you mean? (Extract from 'Assault Rifle', a new book by Max Popenker of the guns.ru site and myself):

From 1952 until 1956, a series of different small-calibre cartridges were developed under the auspices of Project SALVO. These included the 'Homologous Series', based on the 7.62 x 51 case but with different calibres, as tabulated below:

Designation - Metric dimensions - Bullet weight(s) - grams/grains - Muzzle velocities ms/fps

.18 NATO - 4.5 x 52 - 2.24/35 - 1,293/4,240
.22 NATO - 5.56 x 52 - 3.46/53 - 1,200/3,940
.25 NATO - 6.35 x 52 - 5.24/81 - 1,050/3,445
.27 NATO - 6.8 x 52 - 6.52/100 - 950/3,115

The .27/30 ,I'm referring to was a Winchester developement,circa 1890s,I believe.

The first mention of the cartridge as I recall, was in the book"Winchester, the Gun that Won the West"by Harold Williamson, published in 1952.In the book was a listing of
ammo produced by Winchester. The listing was credited to a book titled"Winchester Manufactured Ammunition"?,author?,printed in the 1930s?.

The other mention of the .27/30 was found on Curtis Steinhauer's web site.

He listed the cartridge dimnesions as:bullet dia. .277,
case length 2.49,rim dia. .473,base dia. .471,neck dia. .300.

I would like more info on this cartridge, weapons it was tested in ,etc.

This cartridge may have been Winchester's inspiration for the .270 Winchester.
