Clinton shut down a some military bases in his time. Do you think Obama is going to do the same?

The one I know of that took a big hit is Fort Greely Alaska. Clinton mothballed it during the end latter part of his second term. Fort Greely is now the most secure base in the country and home to the missle defense system. Would be a hell of a thing to see it go back to a ghost town.

I had been hearing of the gas line being a real possiblity and now I expect that may be history also.

Remove some bases and slow down oil and Alaska may become pretty empty.

Only time will tell.

Well I know our base is always being talked about when closers come up. I pray it doesn't happen. Malstrome AFB is about the only thing keeping Great Falls alive at this piont.
A lot of it is due to the city managment to. Every time someone wants to move industry in here they shut them down. Pisses me off!

A lot of these base closings were long overdue. It's not up to the gov. to keep these one horse towns solvent. Although, the way the gov. is going they might as well just hand 'em a check.

President George W. Bush says downsizing U.S. military bases is necessary to transform the military into fighting the war on terrorism.

Speaking to graduates of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., Bush said closing the bases will save billions of dollars, which can be directed towards the war on terrorism.

"We have more bases than we need. Supporting these facilities wastes billions of taxpayer dollars, money that can be better spent on giving you the tools to fight terrorists and confront 21st century threats," he said.

You're right. The problem comes in the form of non-neutrality in the BRAC commission. It would seem that the armed forces are following political clout, not closure based on outdated facilities. Why else would air assets become concentrated in Florida where a hurricane can endanger them? (I'm not talking training here)

Secondly, mega-bases are never a good idea, especially with air assets. Why put you eggs in one basket? The plain ordinary truth is that military muscle costs money and is efficient at only one thing -smashing enemies-.

I implore you to let go your bitterness as it does not become your positive nature. If you allow our adversaries to control your emotions, then you give them mastery over your very soul; you fall into the trap of ultimately becoming what you oppose and lose the best attributes that comprise your very essence. As I've come to know you, I have grown confident in your ability to see the good in any situation and your tenacity in conquering adversity, qualities that I admire very much in my friends. Difficult as the challenges ahead may be, the steepest mountains to be climbed do not originate from without, but from within. I am confident that you are worthy of these challenges and can overcome them, and offer a hand in friendship that we may walk this rocky path together and refuse to allow our adversaries to defeat our spirits. If your strength should falter, I will gladly offer a portion of my own, as I am doing now. Our incarceration will be difficult, but short; our victory will be hard-fought, but glorious. We will rise from the ashes of defeat and persevere to destiny. Die Wahrheit macht frei.

Neither I believe.

I've lived on or near an Air Force base my entire life. They are scary expensive to operate which has led to closures and downsizings. Changing world political climate has also helped decide which bases are on the line. There are Naval bases in this country that make large AF bases look small and cheap and some of those have been closed or downsized, it's just a matter of necessity and money that determines whether a base will stay open or not.

Luke AFB here has been on and off the chopping block a few times. This is the base where many foreign military pilots are taught to fly as well as advanced training for our own pilots. It is seen as a viable, necessary base but our local government can't seem to stem the tide of encroachment by local developers. This is putting a strain on relations with the base and may jeapordize it's status. I bet if they considered the billion or so dollars a year plus civilian jobs for the locals they'd figure it out real quick.
