Why in sam-hill we need a national police force equal to and equally funded as the US Military?

well....this is what I'm thinking.....but can anyone give me a reason that is constructive.... or legitimate..... or in keeping with American ideals????? Unless someone can tell me what positive purpose this civilian defense force has, one has to assume the above reasons are exactly the intended purpose.....and the confiscation of firearms is #1.....as it's all downhill after that.
