I want to start a new one here concerning memorable quotes that we have found inspiring or interesting. I will start with two.#1-He who goes unarmed in Paradise had better be sure that that is where he is.'Thurber'. #2-(This should be carved in stone above every high school front door.) "Happiness may never be sensibly pursued as an end in itself,because happiness is the by product of achievement." 'Parkinson'.

I collect quotations and use many of them for examples or to impart advice, often to my kids. If I know the source, I will quote it. Many of the following are well known, but that doesn't make their message any less valid.

Since this is one I have used often, I will lead a long list with it. The "scarce in that", I usually leave off.

1)"Experience keeps a dear School, but Fools will learn in no other, and scarce in that." B. Franklin, Poor Richard's Almanac, 1758

2) Too soon old, too late smart.

3) Give a child a hammer and the whole world is a nail.

4) "We don't see things as they are, but as we are." Anais Nin

Not really a pithy quote, but one that has meaning in daily life......

5) Ecclesiastes 3
King James Version (KJV)

1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

And similar....not bad for a non-religious person.....

6)"Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."

And this is one of my favorite story/quotes which is from Guys and Dolls by Damon Runyon. The point, which I've tried to make clear to my kids is don't play the other man's game.

The background is that Sky Masterson, a master gambler, has broken everyone gambling, including his Daddy, in his small Colorado town and is leaving on the train for greener gambling pastures in New York. His Daddy (and I don't have the book in front of me to get the whole section exactly correct) says "Son, you've won all my money, so all I can give you is some good advice....

7) "Son, one of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider."

Just FYI, not trying to be critical, the above quote was never said or written by Freud. There are many false attributions of quotes out there. Thomas Jefferson seems to be a favorite.

Tom,before getting back to quotations just a thought on your post. Years ago in my favorite comic strip "Peanuts" Lucy says to Linus,"Would'nt it be great to come back knowing all you know now?" To which Linus replies,"What do I know now?" Linus was always my favorite + heaven knows we have all met a few Lucy's.

Again, nothing personal, but, many of the "applicable" quotes for today's politics of the Founding Fathers are spurious. This is one of them. There is no record of Washington saying or writing this line.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.
