What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

None so far but that’s for deer and elk only
Antelope, B tags and big three is still ways off

Our group of 5 non-resident hunters, over the course of the last 5 years, has drawn 23 out of a possible 25 deer combo tags. Both non-draws happened when someone decided to not apply for a preference point. This year, all 5 of us had 1 preference point and we drew as individuals (not as a group). Amazingly, only 1 drew a deer combo license. Our guide said he has had 16 non-residents so far call him to say they were not drawn. I am almost feeling like there was a big mistake made in the draw, as it seems like the odds should have been much better. Guide attributes some to Canada being closed for hunters. I have a bad feeling that annual deer trips to Montana have come to an end for our group.

- 2018, 100% NR w/1 pref. point got drawn for a deer combo, 60% w/0 points got drawn. Total NR deer combo licenses - 8980
- 2019, 100% NR w/1 pref. point got drawn for a deer combo, 43% w/0 points got drawn. Total NR deer combo licenses - 9276
- 2020,,, 78% NR w/1 pref. point got drawn for a deer combo, 57% w/0 points got drawn. Total NR deer combo licenses - 9868

Drew a non-res breaks archery tag....woot woot! Be my third time....hope this one's the charm.

Applying as a party and for the big game combo increases your chances dramatically.

I think, the guide might be right about Canada being closed, everyone applies in US
Also, Idaho went limited this year as well thus applications I assume are increasing in like Montana where you can still hunt most units on general tag ( not so in Idaho no more )

It is probably 10-15% that no one can go to New Zealand, Australia or Canada and 85-90% all these fucktwits on social media who are showing photos and giving away their DIY hunting information.

I blame the following.

1. Mike Eastman
2. www.gohunt.com
3. Randy Newberg
4. ONXMaps
5. Hunting Fool
6. Culture of Social Media
7. Covid getting people interested in hunting and survival.

There are other things, and who knows what the actual catalyst is, but this is a start.

What took a lot of work.

Finding pockets of out of the way public hunting land.

Is at the finger tips of all now.

There is still land out there with few hunters if one wants to walk a mile or two.

Here in New Mexico I feel that people are more apt to share information on some species but not on all.

Good deer locations are high protected secrets especially for the easier to draw areas.

I cannot imagine living somewhere in the US that you cannot hunt deer without applying for a draw. Weird.

Ann,

New Mexico, Nevada and Utah are 100% draw for both Non-residents and residents.

Most other western states have some OTC deer hunting, but the draw hunts are generally better.

cheers,

Seth

Back when I was in high school you could mostly get OTC tags for deer here. Since then, the human population has expanded dramatically, as has interest in hunting New Mexico. As a result, there are now way more hunters wanting to shoot deer than there are deer waiting to get shot in virtually every game management unit.

That said, if you are willing to hunt marginal areas or with a bow/muzzleloader, your odds of drawing some units are actually pretty decent. In fact, last year several units were undersubscribed and OTC leftovers were available. I hunted in a unit near home with a muzzleloader and had a great time. Never did see "the" deer I wanted, but at least I got out to hunt. There are also a few units with predominantly private land in which one can buy OTC deer tags if you have permission to hunt those private lands.

Yep, graduated in 1993 in Montana, but I lived in Socorro from Oct 1990-Oct 1992, we had OTC deer tags those years.
