If hunting, on rare occasion, an elk, would you stick with the classic 220 gn RN at 2000-2100 fps, or might one use a lighter, more modern design at higher fps? The 150 gn bullets should go well over 2600 and the 165s over 2500. Accubond, Partition, TSX, NF, etc., or just use the classic?

If I was using iron sights I would be happy with the 220gr.
I have learned that long heavy high SD bullets at @2100fps work really well. If I had a scoped rifle and might be shooting to 200 or 250 yards I would use a premium 180gr.

A 180 grain Speer Round Nose is a good alternative....

for economy/price... but provides great accuracy and capability... I also use the 170 grain RN/FNs for the 30/30... in my Krag....longseated of course

cheers

When I get the time I am going to load some 180gr Sierra Round Nose bullets [ because I already have a bunch of them bought at a flood sale], to 30-40 Krag ballistics for use in my 30-06 drilling on the deer lease. They will be easier on the gun and still kill deer and wild pigs from anyangle.

I have used them in my 300 Win Mag loaded at starting 30-06 velocities and they drop deer on the spot.

Anytime I will be shooting game at 200 yards or less I am starting to like a long heavy RN at a moderate velocity.
