If you pick Montana be very careful. Around Bozeman you're crawling over others on public land and good luck on private, not even worth it unless you know someone. Was great 30 years ago, not so great now though you can always find a place to fish. Just too many cool people showing up, construction's going nuts, people trying to catch the next Bozeman-y trend and latch on until it changes. Bunch of squealers who can't change tires and have too much time on their hands. Not so many of these in other places in Montana.

Billings isn't so near the "right" public land to take advantage of it unless you like to drive. Eastern Montana is crawling with new oil field workers. Excellent places that I didn't see a soul for 15 years now have someone parked at the fence every time. Just horrible and it's reality and you have to adapt or turn into a doughnut eater.

North West part of the state is unbeatable as far as public land to hunt on, fishing, etc.. Polson, Kalispel, etc. are tough to beat. Can't go wrong.

Consider Dillon, Lewistown, Helena (under appreciated!), Great Falls, Butte, etc. Places very near massive public land.

Global warming is killing us recently as it's getting colder and two out of three years near record snow fall. if you don't like snow, go to Utah, New Mexico (VERY under appreciated), Southern Colorado, etc.. Yes, they get snow but there's no comparison as far as length of season and hassle factor.

Idaho kicks arse. I spend time in Idaho Falls and Pocatello every now and again. Close drive to NW Wyoming and South Central Montana where you can often get over the counter deer, bear, etc, tags. you can hunt the crap out of Idaho and massive public land blocks. Costs are reasonable. Great people, better climate, etc.

Sheridan Wyoming is well worth a look and my friends who moved there to get away from Bozeman and Billings are going to kill me. They LOVE it and ask me when I'm coming down to live the good life.

Good luck and you really can't go wrong no matter where you go. In spite of the bitching (myself included) there are a ton of good places to be to have fun. Yes, idiots move in from "civilized" "progressive" states and put the hurt on the IQ, common sense, life, etc,. They seem to want "safety" and harmoniousness and life in "the new west" as in stop burning wood for heat, stop using fireworks because they're loud and, no lie, "scare my dogs and my children", don't have horses because they're sad all the time and smell bad. Just stupidity and they're a product of their diseased environment and mind set. You just deal with it by using an excellent weapon: shame. Works every time since reality's tough to argue against. Then you move on.

It is refreshing to see members of this forum/A.R. taking the time to voluntarily give their knowledge and experience about their home turf. Good and bad to a stranger. It speaks volumes about the people of that region, Who have not lost touch with humanity. Kudos and thank you to all.

Those people are not fleeing Kalipornia.They are cashing in their chips.Housing is super expensive there,so you can sell your home at a max profit and buy one somewhere where housing is cheaper and have money in the Bank or twice the house you had before.Also taxes will be cheaper anywhere you go.We have the same problem in Wisconsin with FIBs leaving Illinois.

For many of the animals you have named, Alaska is the only choice.
Problem is, to hunt most of them it takes an airplane to get you to them...

Texas is a good place for deer and pigs. You will have to have a "lease" as there is very little public hunting land here.

IF I had to live somewhere other than Texas I would pick Montana, around Libby/Troy, I have hunted quite a bit there, or Idaho around Elk City, as I have hunted there quite a bit also.

The people in both of those places have always been VERY friendly, and there is great hunting there.

I grew up in Wyoming and the Wyoming of my youth is gone forever. Saying that Wyoming is still better than a lot of other Western states for the quality of life. You are just sharing it with more people than ever.

Some how Denver and Salt Lake folks figured out that Wyoming was only half a gas tank to some decent hunting.

NW Montana is pretty empty, so is northern Idaho.

The area around Anchorage, the Matsu, Fairbanks and Seward Penninsula are full of people. The rest of Alaska is still pretty good. Gets outfitted hard, but it's not a bad place to live.

Problem is hay in Alaska is ludicrously expensive.

I would live in the Yukon if I could, and someday I might. The place is Shangri-La.

right this is 6 months and the COs are checking it the first resident license for big game is interesting if you cant prove and maintain your one year residency then to keep it still 6 months at least in the territory unless due to school, heatlth or job ( that is a big problem and may change) for the outfitters they can be from outside and i will say that 80% are not from here and they need a guide to hunt here like ie Jim Shockey than can guide people but need a guide when thi is time ...

Yukon is still a paradise but we still have the urbanites starting about trying to stop bear hunting, wolf hunting etc. or even using wood for heat so this is a battle and education.

Horses are supposed to be good eating. Don't know about mules.
Couldn't afford horses at those prices, makes the motorcycles and ATV's pretty attractive.

I had 18 horses at one time and slowly cut down to 7. Maybe 5 in the near future. But the cost of hay will eat me out of house and home and all tax benefits in living in AK. Something to consider for sure.
