So I don't want to read too much into this. ledvm, could you let us know your thoughts?

“With years of experience researching lions in southern Africa, I was originally concerned that the FWS’s deliberations would not be based on the best available science,” Dr. Paula White. “I was pleased to see that the overwhelming evidence that was presented today demonstrated that lions are certainly not on the brink of extinction.”

As soon as I hear from several people at the meeting today...I will give a synopsis.

A born Texan has instilled in his system a mind-set of no retreat or no surrender. I wish everyone the world over had the dominating spirit that motivates Texans.– Billy Clayton, Speaker of the Texas House

No state commands such fierce pride and loyalty. Lesser mortals are pitied for their misfortune in not being born in Texas.— Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Texas in May, 1991.

Direct quote from Craig Packer:

(My question was what did you think of the meeting?)

Hard to say. Neither John Jackson nor any of the other pro-hunting types presented any convincing data that hunting is actually good for lions. On the other hand, the anti's didn't present any convincing that hunting was as bad as they claimed.
Call it a draw between the opposing forces.
I dismissed the anti's claims about lions being especially vulnerable to disease and pointed out that at least some hunting companies confiscate a helluva lot of snares. And JJ and I both emphasized that sport hunting now accounts for a very small number of lions each year.
But I did show how lions had been overhunted in the past and stated that there was not yet any evidence that hunters are actually obeying the 6 yr minimum...
But, again, I stressed that the offtakes are now so small that the focus should be on enhancing the management budgets of large protected areas in Africa rather than fretting about the lion's status on the ESA.
So now we wait. We won't know which way they are leaning until Nov/Dec.

Lane,

We won this round as I expected. Also as I expected, the Director said
hunting was a secondary, not a primary issue.

Best,
John

I think at this juncture...there is good reason to optimistically hope for a "Threatened Status"...same as leopard. That what Craig Packer is pushing for. The Threatened status is easily worked with by hunters...IE the leopard.

Lets keep our fingers crossed. I think the Secretary of the Interior will have to at least throw the ANTI's that bone.

Lane- if this is a loss, but they don't decide until Nov-Dec. do you think it will be immediately enforced? In other words, will legally shot lions before the decision be importable, or not? Obviously asking for selfish reasons...

Tim,
My best guess is that you will be just fine. That said I would be nervous about 2014. And...I would be nervous if I had a questionable <6 trophy sitting in TZ.

Well- I gotta kill one first. That's the major hurdle. Will be in Niassa in August, but it takes them at least a year to get them back over here at best...

We can only hope sanity rules here. Without hunting, we will see the demise of the African Lion in many areas of Africa. Anti-hunting groups really don't care about animals. What they care about is stirring up mental midgets until they get them in a "near riot" mentality and ready to strike. Meanwhile, the 95% membership Troll's sit stoic with thumb in ass and fingers on key boards, writing those donation checks in a frenzy.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
