It is not rocket surgery to build one. The only reason I never did it is because I don't like Krags. I have put 405s on everything else; #1 and 4 Enfields, 95s, Mosins, Marlin 336s, (2.2 inch version).

Gosh that's almost anti-American to not like a Kray. I love them. Slick smooth action, superbly accurate, what not to like?

Besides liking do you think they are strong enough for the 405?

I did own one once; full military. It was the design that bugged me; an abomination when far better things were available. And it isn't a US design; it is Danish. We got the design from them; the 1889 Krag-Jorgensen. I mean, we already had a home grown very good bolt action design; the Lee; that was a US design. Why not go with that?
And the one locking lug; yes the handle forms a big safety.
And the rotary magazine? What a mistake. Yes they are super smooth.
I might do one just because; sporterized Krags are easy to get.
Anyway, is is strong enough for a 405? The 405 operates at about 40 K psi, the Krag is slightly more; should be OK, if you are comfortable with 125 year old iron, when heat treating and steel making was not yet fully controlled.

Ok. Point is that is wasn't US. We adopted a poor design when there were better ones out there. One of the best, right here, the Lee.

Aw hell, the Krag isn't as horrible as you make it out to be. The 30-40 cartridge is a great wound. It's even better for cast bullets!! It has a series of excellent sights, some of which carried over the 1903. It doesn't have a mud problem. It's biggest downfall, I believe, is it wasn't set up for stripper clips.

I have one that is chambered for .35 WCF and it runs very smooth; however, I am not sure about the modifications that had to be made to the feeding system. The .405 is just another small step up.
