Does anyone have experience with the Mini-14 in the new 6.8mm caliber? How accurate and reliable is it? Thx ~ Hunter308 | ||

we all have our own opinions, but I do not think you will be as happy with the Ruger as an AR-15. Off the top of my head, the AR can be made much more accurate, more reliable, and you can have uppers in six or seven calibers with just an upper change. Les Baer guarantees his will shoot under half-an-inch at 100yds. Rich That, and magazines are much less expensive for the AR. | |||

I live in Kalifornia and though a deadly rifle is legal, a plastic pistol grip is a felony. I thought a Mini-14 might be an option. ~ Hunter308 | |||

Hunter in your case it is worth a look. My question how much power and or accuracy do you need? Other options would be one of the Kel Tec 223's, the one with the "regular" stock, a SKS with the 10 round stock, a M1 Garand [Tanker Garands are pretty nice] and of course Kalif. legal M1 A. Some of these rifles are more $$$ than others and some are easily scoped, some not. Do you have a specific use or uses in mind? DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY | |||

In your case I'd look hard at the Mini 30. Some say that's the caliber Ruger should have originally made the Mini 14 in. The new Mini's are a little better and some models have a heavier barrel. The 7.62x39 ammo has plenty of surplus to plink with cheap and components are readily available and cheap. | |||

There are several CA Legal AR platforms. All will be more accuarte than a Mini 14. Most Mini 14s shoot "improved cylinder". In general you need to spend another $500 or so to get a Mini 14 down to an 1 1/4 gun. Mike  What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances. | |||

I refer to Mini 14 as a pattern sprayer. It is fool proof and built for abuse but the accuracy is not good. Cal30 If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Devoted member of Newmont mining company Underground Mine rescue team. Carlin East,Deep Star ,Leeville,Deep Post ,Chukar and now Exodus Where next? Pete Bajo to train newbies on long hole stoping and proper blasting techniques. Back to Exodus mine again learning teaching and operating autonomous loaders in the underground. The last Mini 14 I owned (580 series) would shoot 1 1/2"-2" groups at 100yds. I know that's not tack driving accurate but it is more accurate than a few AR's I've owned in the past. I had a Mini-14 years ago. I really liked that gun but always wished it had a better cartridge. I did kill a pig with it. It was pretty accurate with careful hand loads and bullet selection. I had a reliable scope mount on it - it was the pre-ranch rifle model. The triggers polish up quite crisp. It wasn't accurate enough for a varmint rifle which made the 223 chambering pointless. It produced 1 1/4 MOA groups all day long - 10 shot groups. The biggest problem is it wasn't overly accurate with soft the points I had and match bullets which were accurate had no long range killing ability. It was bullet fussy. I don't think the reliability of the gun can be beat. Ruggedness either. Regards 303Guy | |||
