To reach this velocity 73gr Norma 204 would be the first choice!

Thanks. I figured a slower powder would be more suitable. I use H4350 for 286gr Partitions. One of our more experenced forum members recommended the 4320 load so I figured I would give it a try. Bob

N 204 was never accessible in Canada but I found Reloader 19 close to it for velocity acheivement.

In my 9.3x64, long gone but I still have all my reloading data...

320 gr. Woodleighs
RWS cases
Fed 210
26" barrel
10 shot ave. with high and low vel. out.

65 grs. of IMR-4895 2490 FPS (62 gave 2410)
65 grs. of IMR-4350 2325 FPS

300 gr. Swifts
67 grs. of IMR-4320 2560 FPS (2 shots)
77 grs. of IMR-4350 2631 FPS ( absolute max )

As with any quoted load powder charges can vary from rifle to rifle so start 15% below the above and work up to your rifles max....

Also I found with the 9.3x64 the difference between std. primers and magnum primers made a big difference in pressure..Use the Fed 210s or cut the charge back 3 grs. for the 215s..

4895 is a great powder in the 9.3x64 IMO

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll be pulling the bullets on the remainder of the warm loads. I like idea of using the 4350 and I think I have some 4895 around here also. Bob

Back to the range today to chrono the 9.3x64.
Reduced the powder charge of 4320 to 62gr, all
other components unchanged.
Avg 10 shots 2402fps with 300gr A Frames
Easy extraction, no plunger mark on case head.
Same accuracy. I will probably stick with
this load.

Here's my load's for 9,3x64.

300 gr A-Frame :
RWS Brass.
I always use CCI 200 primer for all loads.

Vithavuori N 140 - 60 - 63 grains

Reloader 15 - 61 - 64 grains

Norma 203B - 60 - 64 grains

Max loads works best in my Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless.

For what it is worth 65 grs of 4320 in a RWS case with win large rifle primers and the 300 Swift is about max in my 9.3x64. I have to ask why would you start @ 67 grs. What ever happened to reduce someones max load by 10% and work up carefully???

Snowman,
Good point. Got the data from a friend with way more experience with this caliber than myself. I didn't even start reloading until 1980 so I am still learning. How did you arrive at 65gr? How far beyond 65gr before you experienced signs of excessive pressure?
Thanks for the data, Bob

VFR1 I started out using data from the Nosler loading manual and some that Ray offered. My rifle is a custom mauser 98 and just because a load was safe in Ray's rifle that didn't meen it was safe in mine. I would reduce loads by 5 or 6 grains and then increase one grain at a time. Checking for case head expansion, flattened primers stiff bolt lift etc. I worked up loads with the 286 ,293 and 300 gr bullets. I had gone as high as 67 grs but the bolt was stiff to open. 65 grs was smooth and very accurate and case life has been good. no expanded primer pockets. Hope that helps

Snowman, I will up it a gr to 63gr as 62gr gave me no problems. If I can get 2450fps, that will give me 4000ftlbs, pretty close to the original .404 and .450/.400 loadings. The next project will be working up 10.75x68 loads. Thanks again, Bob

Bring that speed down to perhaps a tad under 2300 fps and see how it goes. Factory loads with 286-grain bullets usually are around 2300 fps, so your load seems too hot to me. Your load is somewhere over 300 fps over the maximum for factory loads.

For the 9.3x62, yes. For the 9.3x64, no.

Interesting. For what it's worth, the A-square reloading manual, "Any Shot You Want," claims that Norma and Reloader powders are identical

quote:
For our European and African friends, who may have difficulty locating the various powders, there is an authorized substitution. Reloader-22 is exactly the same thing as Norma MRP. Reloader-19 is exactly the same thing as Norma-204. Reloader-15 is exactly the same thing as Norma-203. These powders come from exactly the same place and are made at exactly the same time. The powder from that plant is simply shipped to a different place and is put into a different consumer pack

(pp 274-275)

I tend to be wary of information like that. Information can become dated and things can change (the manual was published in 1996). But it tends to conform with your experience so it may be accurate.

Several years ago someone published a letter here from Hercules stating that the Reloader and Norma powders were idenical and gave the European mfg. I was about to find the file when I saw this post.

I loaded only 5 rounds with 63.5gr of 4320, all else remaining constant except the temp, 62*F.
Avg 5 shots, 2445fps. Is this consistant with the results you guys are getting with 300gr bullets? Thanks, Bob

366 Torque,
THAT IS NOT MY POST YOU QUOTED AS BEING MINE, although I have used a very simulair load in one particular rifle and had no issues with it. I used Fed 210 primers so perhaps that was the difference, but I got the same velocity.
