If I am to use the AR definition of "medium bore", here are my choices which are currently used by me.

280 AI
28 Nosler
300 RUM

If I were to blur the bore-size line, I'd use:

6.5 Creedmoor
28 Nosler
416 Rem Mag

Tex, I agree with Ray. All you need is a good 30-06. If you feel you need a spare then buy 2 30-06s that are identical and hunt one and but the other in the safe for emergency use.

I have a good friend that was raised on a homestead north of Fairbanks, AK and the only rifle his family had was a 30-06. They shot everything with it.

I appreciate the input from y’all. On further thought, maybe I should ditch the 30-06 and just go with the 7mm-08 (or 280) and the 35 Whelen.

Even though my 30-06 is my least used rifle, it would be the last one to go, as ammo is so ubiquitous and it so flexible. Everyone should have at least one 30-06, even if it’s contained in a PVC capsule and buried in the ground awaiting the zombie apocalypse! Big Grin

Tex,

You have a good idea there. With a 280 Rem. and a 35 Whelen, you’ve got a very good (2) rifle battery that would honestly cover all of your medium bore bases/needs.

If you cannot give up the idea of being without a 30-06, I say the more the merrier. And like Mike Dettorre’s suggestion, those three cover about all of the medium bore bullet weights:

280: 140-175 gr.

30-06: 180-220 gr.

35 Whelen: 225-310 gr.

Covered like a blanket... beer

OP mentioned Coyotes and speed goats. (His choices are fine by the way). Personally I would prefer 257 Rob, 280 Rem and a 338-06 3 gun battery for the named quarry.

I don't see many, it any poor choices in this thread, a couple of border line and its not the 30-30, that's a favorite of mine, it would be un-American to feel otherwise...

7x57 (R) / I have always liked the cartridge for deer hunting in the European landscape. Its rimmed version was the one I have used initially with my O/U. Great for light singleshots too.

300 H&H (or flanged for SS) / The belted cartridge is a pure nostalgia but the cartridge feeds really slick. A take down would be my first choice for a travelling rifle.

9.3x64 (or 375 H&H) / For moose, bear or the very large antelope it is the best solution.

I know you said no belted mags. The 375 H&H is just too good to not be a part of this line up, in fact if actions and so fourth had been more plentiful and less expensive at the time the of 35 Whelens development the motive to develop the 35 Whelen would have been much less.

Ammunition availability, should you be in a bind for ammo, for whatever reason the above 3 seem to be where ever ammo is sold. It's popular.

Don't expect to find 7mm-08 or 35 Whelen in your average ammo section. Small mom and pop stores out in the boonies can only afford to stock sellers in ammo. 7mm-08 and 35 Whelen will gather dust so stocking those is not an option.

My choices

Medium gun - .338-'06
Big gun - .404 Jeffery

That said, I've killed most of my game with a 6.5 X 55 and a 7mm RM.

I picked up a piece of paper on my end table with three CZ 550 rifles that Wayne at AHR has made for me on his #3 package. I thought about this thread after I read it. Here are the three that I have commissioned him to make. Not a bad (3) rifle medium bore battery:

6.5x55---120-160 gr.

30.06----165-220 gr.

9.3x66---250-320 gr.

I see a lot of guys naming small bore's. What's up with that?

Whistling

Here's my 3 Medium bores.

30/30 - because everyone needs a good basic lever action.

300 H&H - Load it up, load it down. Covers everything a 308, 30/06, and 300 Mag will do.

375 H&H - Great "light" rifle for Africa that can fill in for the big stuff if the big bore develops an issue, handles big brownies in NA and Russia, still at home for elk / moose.

YMMV

What terrible choices Wink

Blaser only makes a barrel for 375H&H. Therefore, the other two have to be irrelevant choices Big Grin

That switch barrel bafoonery is a joke. Just another example of Blaser being a "fix" for something that isn't broken.

Not to mention they are butt ugly. barf

.280 Rem, something in .338 and you're covered. Lots off great bullets available.
If you want to shoot varmints, get a varmint round like .223 Rem.

Interesting thread in that you get to defend your choices... assuming hunting is the reason for the guns.

For mid bores as defined by Saeed-
.27-sub .375

The ones I've used the most- and if I had to sell them off, these would be the last mid bores of mine to go.

.30-06. Does everything you need for big game in North America.

.300 RUM. Only reason I got it was the ungodly long point blank range. It doesn't kill any better than a .30-06.

.330 Dakota- it's a pocket .340 weatherby. Kind of neither fish or fowl, it doesn't have the wallop of a big bore, but it has more punch than the .30 stuff. Really, for me if I was worried about ammo, I'd be as well served with a .338 win mag, but I liked the Dakota rifle better than the Winchester, weatherby, or Remington ones I had a choice of at the time.

If target and self defense are added in, then I'd pull the .300 and add a .308 service rifle of some stripe.

If you use classic definitions of mid bores, the .330 would be swapped with the .375.

I would survive all my hunting with just a .22 rimfire, 12 ga shotgun, .30-06, and a .375, but that would be no fun...

I like the idea of going wood/ synthetic/wood. Only thing I would further specify would be 24/22/21 inches, in that order. That covers long distance ligher game, all around, and heavier game and/or thick cover. A short Whelen should still preform great and would be real handy if you know you'll be crawling in the thick stuff.

300 H&H 1S killed everything dead from Springbok to Eland
375 H&H 1H It actually is a medium bore.

I’m just confused by so many people that think that a .270 is the ultimate cartridge. I’ve owned several, but none can perform with a .30 mag. Maybe is it with you folks and this obsession of a .270. Yes, it can kill, but it’s way far too inefficient to cover all of NA game. A .375 H&H is the ultimate cartridge for all big game hunting. It will kill. Yes, all you crazies, bullet placement means everything, but there’s a huge difference between a 130 gr bullet and a 300gr bullet. If you don’t believe it, but on a flack jacket and take a shot in the chest from a 300gr .375 and another from a .270 with a .130gr bullet. It’s just craziness.

So this is a thread about a “3 Rifle battery of medium bores” and you are confused why people are able to choose a 270 as one of their choices?

Deer and elk don’t wear flak jackets so a 270 will get the job done.

Well I think the 375 H&H is a little light for elk, got my last cow elk at 225 yards with a 570g TSX from my 500 Jeffery. Couldn't take the 270, gave it to my son ... He got his first elk with it several years ago.

Understand. In my opinion, the 270 shoots flatter than a 30-06, hits just as hard (with the exception of the heavier (200g and 220g) bullets), and recoils less. With 90g Sierra HPBTs at 3500 fps it makes one hell of a varmint round. Shooting 150g Partitions at 3000 fps it is deadly on deer, elk and bear. It's been used successfully on grizzly, but in my mind it's too light for that. you really have to go up to the 300 Mags to significantly beat it, and a lot of folks don't handle the recoil of the big 300s all that well.

Chuck

The late, great Jack O'Conner killed dozens of big game with his .270 to include: antelope, deer, caribou, elk, moose, black bear, and grizzlys.

Most were reported as one shot kills.

What more can you want in a medium bore in North America?

Unless you specialize in killing moose or grizzlys at 300 yards, the .270 should do everything needed for general big game hunting in the USA.

JMO, of course.

I was able to examine two custom Montana made rifles a few weeks ago in .257 Roberts a.i., both made on fn Mauser actions, with shaped actions and octagonal barrels. Beautiful claro stocks, the matched pair weight 6.5 lbs a piece. I’ll inherit one of them one day.

To the hunter who has become proficient with an individual rifle, or rifles, what is most important isn't other rifle calibers, but the one (s) he or she uses. To you the .270 may not be the best choice, but to those who use it is the best.

For example, in Alaska where I have been living for many years, the .270 to the .338 are the most popular rifle calibers with hunters. The 7mm Magnum is next, and the .375 is somewhere behind. The .30-06 tops them all, however.

Out of all of those the .338WM is my favorite, but I would not mind using any of those others I have listed as an all around gun, as long as it is loaded with the proper ammo for the hunt.

The whole thing depends on what game you hunt, and the terrain. For example, if I was hunting bears is the coastal and forested areas of Alaska where rifle weight is not an issue, then any heavy or light rifle is fine with me. But if I was hunting caribou in the open tundra and had to do a lot of walking, there is no way I would carry the average .375H&H. I just put it in the safe, and take one of the lightweight and less powerful rifles such as a .270, .308, and so on.
