3 Rifle battery of medium bores

I'm thinking through what I want in a rifle collection and have realized that I don't really need more than three rifles. I'm not interested in magnums and plan on borrowing a big bore for buffalo. For everything else, here's what I'm thinking:

--7mm-08 w/ walnut stock - Deer, pronghorn, coyotes.

--30-06 in stainless w/ McMillan stock - Elk, black bear, moose, sheep, ibex, medium plains game. This will also serve as a backup to the 7mm-08 and the 35 Whelen.

--35 Whelen w/ walnut stock - Larger plains game such as sable, kudu, gemsbok, moose, grizzly.

I feel like these three calibers pretty much cover everything. Agree or disagree? Any other suggested calibers?

Your rifles should work fine. Whenever this subject comes up I think of John Jobson who wrote for "Sports Afield" when I was a teenager. He had two rifles for the world, a .270 Win. and a .375 H&H. I have used lots of different calibers on game but probably could have done just as well with a .270 and .375. However, I was really pleased with how my .458 Lott performed on buffalo in both Africa and Australia.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

My answer was two Merkel Helix actions and three barrels: 6.5x55, 7mm RemMag, 9.3x62.

I have one pretty grade 6 wood stock, one clean plastic stock and one stock that is for abuse. I’m really tempted to pick up a .222 barrel set to cover all the bases just for giggles.

Good times!

Robert

Sure.
Either the 7mm-08 or the 30-06 would cover every big game animal you mentioned. You could be comfortable with a 223 & 30-06. If it had to be 3 rifles I’d prob do a 223, 30-06,and as a joke throw in a 9.3x62, which I have all three. The 7mm-08 covers a lot of ground though.

I am back from a long Hiatus... or whatever.
Take care.

I'm with ya. My centerfire rifle battery consists of two 7mm-08s, three 30-06s and two 338 Win Mags. I prefer the 338 Win Mag to the 35 Whelen as I believe it to be a deeper penetrator using bullets of similar weight and construction (225 grain TTSX) because of its narrower frontal diameter and faster velocity. However, I too would probably pick the 35 Whelen if I didn't want a magnum medium bore. I really like the idea of a 30-06 necked up to 35 caliber. It just seems right.

Lots of other calibers will work but that's where I am currently sitting.

I could never decide on such a trio, as there is much overlap in use, but here are my contenders:

1) Deer, antelope, pigs, vermin-
257 Roberts

2) Deer, antelope, pigs, Elk, Moose, big bears, plains game-
7x57, 30-06

3) Deer, antelope, pigs, Elk, Moose, big bears, plains game, dangerous African game (where allowed)
9.3x62

The mental anguish in just contemplating all of this is just too stressful!!! If I try to think about it with pure practicality, I come up with , 223 Rem, 30-06, and 375 H&H. However, like Whitney Houston said, regarding her seemingly irrational devotion to a man-pig, “You love who you love.” We rifle looney’s often seem to love some irrational rifle rounds. Come to think of it, a three rifle battery seems irrational. With 110 to 220 grain bullets, the 30-06 can cover an amazing amount of ground.

I agree that your choice is a good one, as are many others..

I also suggest that you would be just as well off with a 30-06 and no other. based on your pick in that the 06 with a 200 gr Nosler is every bit as good as the 35 Whelen. sofa

I personally would go with a 30-06 and a .375 H&H..Never know when one might bump into a mad buffalo, Lion, Hippo or elephant..depending on what country I was hunting in or what part of certain countries I was hunting in..

Three medium bores? My most used rifles are:

270 Winchester - a couple of Wiebe Brno 21s, a custom pre-war Model 70, and a Dakota 70 among other 270s are my go to rifles for most of my big game hunting.

300 H&H - a Wiebe custom ZG 47 and a similar Mauser Stanard Model are my favorites when I need something with more thump than a 270. A Wiebe 300 Win Mag makes an occasional appearance too.

9.3X64 Brenneke - another Wiebe custom built on a ZG 47 action is the rifle I wish I had more opportunities to put to proper use. It’s put my 375s out of business.

So, I’m taking this literally from the AR definiton of Medium Bore: .277-.366 caliber.

I think Mike Dettorre has a great answer in his 270, 338-06, 9.3x62.

First, they are all medium bores by the AR definition. I see some suggestions above that contain Large and Small bores.

Secondly, I like to separate different calibers by their bullet weights (and reasonably close velocities), so as to avoid duplicating overlaps. So, using Mike’s suggestion, here are bullet weights I would chose to hunt with these calibers against various animals:

270: 130-160 gr.

338-06: 210-250 gr.

9.3x62: 286-320 gr.

These bullet weights from 130-320 gr. would cover a lot of hunting ground for me, with NO overlap. Just because I am partial to the 280, I’d probably replace the 270 with it, and shoot 140-175 gr. bullets. That’s just me.

Now, if we’re talking just any three rifle battery, I chose the classic Small, Medium, & Large bore.

But that’s another story...

I think the 7-08 is overkill for coyotes, and redundant with the 0-6 there.
[can't believe I just said that only having a 7X57 for years and years shooting everything from rock chucks through moose with it]

but I'd go to something like a 22-250, 25-06, and an 8mm-06 if I wanted to stay out of the magnum camp and cover my bases.
by 8mm-06 I meant 8 mauser with real loads.

So I have my .22-250 for varmints from gophers to coyotes and other critters up through deer and antelope;

And my .257 Ackley that I built for deer and antelope, but have used it for most critters from prairie dogs to elk, and all of my mountain sheep.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by surefire7:

But thanks to surefire7 reminding us of the AR definition of Medium Bores, I don't have to count those two rifles in my allowed three, so

I'll count my .308 Win for deer/antelope size critters and great for plinking at our range steel gongs,

And my Stainless Steel/ Tupperware stocked 7 mm Rem mag for everything from coyotes to moose, especially in wet weather,

And for my third, my Fancy walnut stocked .300 Weatherby that I built mainly for elk, but I consider it good for anything in North America (although if I were ever to go after Coastal brown bears I would use my .375 RUM, which doesn't count because again by AR definition, its a big bore).

A rifle battery consisting of 3 "medium bores" only?

1) 25-06.

2) 300 H&H.

3) either a .35 Whelen or a .375H&H.

Some overlap maybe, but those cartridges cover a lot of hunting ground.

I know what a two rifle battery would be, 270win and 35 Whelen.

I guess for the 3rd I'd pick 8mm rem mag, since I seem to have a soft spot for it.

This is a ridiculous thread, but I’ll stupidly chime in. I have become addicted to the Browning X-Bolts. I have an X-Bolt in 6.5 Creedmoor, .308, .300 H&H, and .375 H&H. All are tack drivers. However, my varmit gun is the Tikka T-3Lite in 22-250, what a shooter. It’s a lot of fun to be able to have choices. I love the feel, handling, safety, and accuracy of the X-Bolts. It’s a custom rifle at $1000 or less, and factory ammo works great. And no, Browning has not sponsored me in any way. I just discovered the X-Bolt and was blown away.

I am having real trouble selecting my three chamberings from my rifles. I will give three selections in order to keep my sanity. First three ——- .257 Wby-.300 Winny-.358STA. Second three —- 6.5 PRC- 7mmSTW- .338 Lapua. Third three —- .243WSSM-.270 WSM- .340 WBY. There now you can see my hard choices that I did’n have to make. Good Shooting.

I like that two rifle combination. I gave my prized 270 to my son, so I have to live with my two rifle combination of a 270 Weatherby and a 500 Jeffery.

30/06 - the core/main round

2 other rounds centered around the 30/06

300 win mag for flinging that same 180 grain Barnes for longer range

6.5 creedmoor for when a lighter rifle is needed

But the 30/06 does it all.

When I look at where I am and where I've been in my hunting life, my medium trio would be a .270, a two seventy, and a twenty-seven zero.

When I look at what medium bores I have or have had and have used:
6.5x55
6.5 Cm
.270
7/08
7/30 Waters
7x57
275 Rigby
.308
30/30
30/06
338/06
35 Rem
350 Rem Mag
9.3x62* (disclaimer, recent acquisition and have not hunted with it yet)

All have worked as designed and needed under the circumstance in which they were used.

The 338/06 would be my primary medium bore rifle if it weren't for the fact that if you get separated from your ammo, you're SOL.

I have tremendous respect for the 30/06 and will always have one around, but my heart lies with the 270.

It's always fun to talk about the 30/30 and 35 Rem in comparison to one another. Using cup and core bullets, I've never noticed a real difference between the two. I shot some game with hard cast 35 cal Keith style bullets and they penetrated in to next week. It truly took the little 35 Rem to the next level.

Mine is pretty easy.
1. Remington 700 Titanium in .260Rem topped with a Swarovski 1.5-6x42 - Walking rifle/night rifle

2. Christensen Arms Mesa in 6.5PRC topped with Leupold VX5HD 3-15x44 - Over-watch/stand rifle.

3. Weatherby Mark V Outfitter in 300Wby with Zeiss 3-12x50 - Utility do-all no doubt it's enough rifle, rifle.

Could also go 240, 270, and 340 Weatherby in Ultra Lightweights and the 340 in a Weathermark.

A guy could play the "could also go" game all day.

Here's my 3 Medium bores.

30/30 - because everyone needs a good basic lever action.

300 H&H - Load it up, load it down. Covers everything a 308, 30/06, and 300 Mag will do.

375 H&H - Great "light" rifle for Africa that can fill in for the big stuff if the big bore develops an issue, handles big brownies in NA and Russia, still at home for elk / moose.

YMMV

My current battery of medium bores consists of:

A 243 Heym SR20 - a lighting bolt action that wears a 4-12x50 Swarovski. Use this for Roe Deer and Foxes at longer ranges

A 7x57 Rigby with 3-9 x36 - used for red deer

A 7x65r / 16 bore over and under Ferlach with a Zimmerman Einstecklauf in 7x65r. As a combination it has a 6x42 and a 140gn billet it is a very good allround hunting gun. Have taken Roe to 200m. I drop in the Einstecklauf and use a 1-4x20 Docter Scope with a Red Dot zeroed to 173gn H-Mantle and ideal for wild boar and woodland use.

I have recently added a Varmint Barrelled 223 Remington that is pretty much used for cheap bashing gong type shooting.

I might one day rebarrel the Heym to 6.5 Creedmoor or 7x57 - it’s a long left handed action, The Rigby is tight handed and on long term loan. And would then add a 30-06 or 9.3x62 left hand bolt action for bigger stuff if needs be.

I guess I was just not paying attention. If I were narrowing down my collection that much, most would probably only need two medium bores between 270-366. I tend to think of the 375 as a medium bore like the Brits do. Amend mine to 280, '06, and 318WR.

You should add a 6.8x64, just for variety.

Thanks for pointing out the gap in my lineup.
I shall buy a 6.8x64 immediately!

Completely agree.

I see a lot of guys naming small bore's. What's up with that?

Whistling

Here's my 3 Medium bores.

30/30 - because everyone needs a good basic lever action.

300 H&H - Load it up, load it down. Covers everything a 308, 30/06, and 300 Mag will do.

375 H&H - Great "light" rifle for Africa that can fill in for the big stuff if the big bore develops an issue, handles big brownies in NA and Russia, still at home for elk / moose.

YMMV

What terrible choices Wink

Blaser only makes a barrel for 375H&H. Therefore, the other two have to be irrelevant choices Big Grin

Mike

That switch barrel bafoonery is a joke. Just another example of Blaser being a "fix" for something that isn't broken.

Not to mention they are butt ugly. barf
