I could do very happily with 270 and the 375.

If I was to stick in a 3rd one then 6mm/06 and in a very accuracy based rifle. However, the 270 does very well with this as well.

Did you ever wonder what it is about guys with an average of 2 safes full of guns musing about getting by with only three that is so captivating? Big Grin

I cant quite figure it out either, but today Im gonna go with 22-250, 280 Rem and a 405 Win just for the hell of it.

Happy Veterans day by the way. And thanks to all of our veterans for your service. patriot

I would go for:

1) 6.5x55 or 7x57 mauser 22” barrel
2) 9.3x57 or 358 win mauser 18” barrel full stock for brush hunting and a truck gun
3) 9.3x62 or 375-06 AI mauser 24” barrel

A 3-rifle battery for the world and even thick-skinned dangerous game in a pinch.

I would choose from my rifles the .257 Wby, the .358 STA, and the .416 Rigby or Rem. They have handled all I have personally taken from the smallest to the largest. Ask me to morrow and I will say three different chamberings. Good Shooting

Those are a nice battery, but the guy at the beginning had asked for 'non-magnum'.

I guess that I transgressed a little when I said, "270 Win, 338 WM, Done."

PHurley before him put together 3 quite nice, too: ".257 Wby, the .358 STA, and the .416 Rigby or Rem."

I look for balance in battery. Many on this list solve the problem by getting one of everything.

So for a light, accurate, far-reaching deer and antelope rifle? It would be hard to beat the 270 Win, although a 7-08, 6.5PRC and 280 are all equal to the job.

With deer and antelope covered out to 500 yards, what is next? Something heavier. Not just the same bullets faster, but a bigger bullet.

I think of the 338 WinMag as a non-magnum magnum. It is a natural growth in case capacity to push the bigger bullets. It does give up a little bit of speed to the 270, but not much. It's like a bigger bullet to a 30-06.

And for North America, everything is adequately covered with the 338. But I would personally choose something bigger for an Alaskan Brownie as well as Africa, where I like to hang out. Handloaded 416 Rigbys are awesome. 6000+ ft#. But the rifles are big and on the heavy side for long walks in the forest. If it is true that we can acquire wisdom in our later years, then I might trade in a pound or two of rifle in order to carry a 416 Ruger. I suppose that's a magnum, too, and crosses the line into "big bore" territory. So I guess we all have our inconsistencies. A handy 375 Ruger might sit on the borderline, but I would trade up to an accurate 416 if given a chance. The 416 is a great impala gun. :-)

The above was two shooters off a 100-yard car hood, checking out a 416 for a long walk.

It paid off many hours later. It was timed nicely as the daddy stepped across an opening following a long string of does. Luck? Instinctive shooting off my knees? Well, tasty for sure.

But we digress. Back to the thread.

270 Winchester.
338 Winchester (Magnum)
Done.

PS: Of all the calibers listed for a "well-rounded battery", the one that we do not have in the family, yet, is the 416 Ruger. I guess that is what age is all about.

I agree with 416Tanzan that the 270 / 338 combo makes a lot of sense. I ultimately decided on a 280 AI / 35 Whelen combo which is pretty close in performance to the 270 and 338.

This kind of hair splitting is a little silly but fun.

One rifle battery: 375 H&H
Two rifle battery: 375 H&H, 30-06
Three rifle battery: 375 H&H, 30-06, 243

I add the 243 because I haven't and don't plan to hunt anything on the big 4 (or 5) aside from Cape buffalo.

Just swap that 243 for a 22 or a shotgun for guides fowl/birds.

So many “legendary” HuntersDe a career of 3 rifles and a shotgun. How did they ever do it? :-)

Nice choices. For the future, here's a neat caliber to consider. My first choice if the need arises for a heavy hitter. playin' with the 404 Jeffery.

Have fun.

Completely agree.

I see a lot of guys naming small bore's. What's up with that?

Whistling

Here's my 3 Medium bores.

30/30 - because everyone needs a good basic lever action.

300 H&H - Load it up, load it down. Covers everything a 308, 30/06, and 300 Mag will do.

375 H&H - Great "light" rifle for Africa that can fill in for the big stuff if the big bore develops an issue, handles big brownies in NA and Russia, still at home for elk / moose.

YMMV

coffee

What terrible choices Wink

Blaser only makes a barrel for 375H&H. Therefore, the other two have to be irrelevant choices Big Grin

Mike

That switch barrel bafoonery is a joke. Just another example of Blaser being a "fix" for something that isn't broken.

Not to mention they are butt ugly. barf

It was worth reading this thread just to see Todd’s last comment! jumping

Rather pointless thread IMO...Too many workable choices to come up with anything of value....as you can see by the number of options and opinions, none of which are without merit...

Ray,

I agree. Lots of options that would work. After a lot of years and experimenting, I've decided that my battery is a .30-06 and a .416. Don't think I'll ever need anything else.

Want is a different deal.

I am finally down to two calibers for Africa. Two .270 WSMs for culling and small game and a .416 Rigby for everything else. I could probably get away with just the Rigby, but trying to find that much powder in Africa for culling isn't practical. Wink

But caliber choices and selection are what keeps the gun industry alive. Rifles and calibers are like wine and women, you should experience them all.

I think I could get by with my 6.5x55 with 125 NP, 338-06 with 185 TTSX and 9.3x66 with 250 ACB. Switch the 250 ACB for a 286 NP or solid and you've basically got it all covered.
