I have always considered H4831 to burn too slow for 308W based cartridges, and yes I have tried some. The Richard Lee second edition of "Modern Reloading" does give a load for it, however. He says 44 grains as a starting point, with a MAX load of 49 grains behind a 150 grain jacketed bullet. I have experienced better performance from IMR4064 in the 7/08 but using 140 grain Hornady I.L. flatbased bullets.

I found a pound of H414/w760 but very little reloading for a 7mm-08.

Not ideal but the best powder that I can find and the old H4831 will fit the rest of the rifles.

I saved a lot of old 270 and 7mm 150 grain spire points. When in a hurry I could pull the remington bullets and reload with Noslers and get well under an inch group when not reloading over the years.

I may hae to shoot center mass with these bullets but it is not like the world will end with a lost pig or two.

About all I do now it take pictures and shoot hogs and coyotes on a friends ranches in the hill country.

Anyone with loads using H414/W760 and 140 or 150 grain loads? I would like to see them if possible.

As someone else said we shoot what we can find right now.

Nosler No. 8 lists 7mm-08 H414 LOADS FOR 150 grain jacketed bullets:

44.5 gr. for 2520 fps in a 26" barrel
max is 46 grains for 2800 fps in a 26" barrel.

I like 140s in my 7 X 57 but there isn't much difference between them.

I like 140's or 139's too. But do you shoot you good 1/2 group bullets or the Crap Remington 150's that you have been saving for 30 years?

It means that I cannot try fun head shots and such the owner does not have a problem with center mass shots either. I have one place that you can set up on a gate fence post at about 220 yards and used to shoot to kill on spot but the I had a flat one night. This is the worst place on his ranches for cactus, Mesquite and wahiea sp. After that I have had problem with head shots and seem to get center mass every shot. ?) Wink and miss having go drag a dead hog off after dark.

If those are Remington CoreLokt bullets, I would use them. They are good bullets. They shoot very well in my 7mm.

JimTX, I've used Varget, H4350 and Big Game in my 7mm-08's. So far, I've gotten better accuracy using Varget with most bullets but, better velocity with Big Game. For accuracy neither of my rifles like max loads with any of the above powders. I'm using 140 gr. Nosler AB's in my Tikka T3 and 140 gr. Sierra Pro Hunters in my Browning BLR. Next project, I'm going to try 140 gr. Nosler Partitions with Big Game.

The Sierra 5th edition has the following loads for w760 w/150 gr. bullets:
Starting Load - 38.9 gr. Velocity 2,400 fps
40.6 gr. 2,500 fps
42.3 gr. 2,600 fps
43.9 gr. 2,700 fps
Max load - 45.6 gr. 2,800 fps

Good luck!

There is a spread on these loads as I look back and 760 on the 270 and 280 that I have for Max load. guessing the same for the 7mm-08 loads.

I have the old Remington 150 blunt nose bullets with the sorry BC. I hate to shoot up my Hornaday 139's.

On the Hodgdon site they show.
a max of 46.5 for 139 BT and 50k cup 2810FPS
and 46 and 49.5 cup for 140 sp and 48.5k

and for the 150 sp 46.5 BS 50K 2776 FPS

JimTX, I hope I didn't misunderstand your post, but I would not try to extrapolate (spread or otherwise) of any load for a .270 or .280 back to a 7mm-08. Pressure is caliber specific and can even vary depending on which brand brass and bullet you are using. For this reason, I try to rely on published load data. The load data I gave you above were for 150 gr. bullets for the 7mm-08, and came straight from the Sierra 5th addition manual. I have manuals from several bullet manufactures and try to stay as close to possible to their recommendations especially if I use their bullets and/or brass.

I have loaded for 5 different 7-08's. The 140's are probably the best balance for the 308 case capacity in 7mm. WW 760 and IMR 4350 Have been the optimum for me. Use magnum primers with 760. Just tried some RL-16 which was a bust, as it is too bulky and gave poor accuracy . Getting 140's to 2750 and 2825 fps, depending on the rifle. Barrel lengths were 22 to 24".

I appreciate the advice.

I went to the friends place And shot my share of hogs this weekend. I have a surprise at the old Remington 150 shot as well as they did. Hog seem to fall out to about 150 yards And the old Nosler 150 ballistic tips did they shoot well father out 250 range.

When I was reloading I pulled the bullet on one of the Hornaday Whitetail deer hunters. 7mm-08 Rounds and found it Held 43 1/2 grains Of a spherical powder similar to the look of H4140 though I doubt it’s the same powder. Interesting several years ago when I was shooting this brand of ammo it was giving me about 2850 and when I checked the load yesterday I was getting 2725 to 2750.

I had a friend who had a connection in Remington. I was told that the original Remington 140 Factory ammo was loaded with 760 and Hornady 139 flat base spire points. I have no way of verifying that other than I was introduced to the "connection" at an IBS regional match. The higher velocities that I have achieved with 140's in the 7-08 were with 760.

I e up with H414 46 grains one hole 270. 47 gr was poor 2” and worse Hornaday sst 139 no good groups

139 btsp great but one grain made a big difference

I also shot BLC-2 and 43 gr one hole 2770. And 44 under an inch 2840 FPS

I did find the Hodgdon database and it’s fantastic I ran it for the loads I wanted to shoot was just the 139 spbt And this website gave me 19 choices plus I found the maxed loads powder What is more accurate than the Nosler site

It gave me a lot of choices to find powder for my seven MM 08 from

I also picked up a pound of H380 and someone gave me a can of reloader 17. The database list the max load for the H380 but I can find nothing on the reloader 17 other than 17 and 16 are about the same range as the H 4350 range of powders.
Let me know if you shot the 17

Thanks for the help JimD

I would highly recommend this database for you in this time of a shortage of powders and shoot what you can find LOL

Besides this database I recommend you get a list out there of the powders from the Fastest to slowest powders made and another list of puts similar powders within 5% in the same basic range

But if you’re trying to work up a load I would really look at this HOdgdon. reloading page because for each gun it gives you a set of powers that will work and you run them with the bullet you want bullets to see What falls in the range you might be able to you
