For ten years I kept a Model 600 in .350 Remington Magnum for a loaner rifle when friends come to Alaska to hunt caribou. For no other reason that I wanted another, I just purchased the same model in 6.5 Rem. Mag. The rifle came wiht dies and 200+ rounds of brass so I have another loaner rifle. They have to be the ugliest rifles ever made but are light weight adn if they get dropped or lost it is not the end of the world.

The 6.5 will get cerakoated in black for rust proofing and I'll add a Leupold 2.5-8x scope and replace the trigger guard and plate with metal and add a bolt removal device to aid in cleaning. I'll also add a slip of pad to lengthen the pull.

It's an interesting departure from the world of double rifles, to state the least.

very nice.

My buddy's first rifle was a Browning BAR in 7mm Mag, he told Frank salesman this was THE best caliber. Frank tried to talk him out of it.

fast forward a few years he started carrying a Rem 600 in 308.

I have two 600's, both .222. One has a cut down stock for youth (still have the original full lenth stock for when they get older). Both have metal trigger guard--the plastic ones warp. One or the other of these two have accounted for several young guys first deer.

The 600 Rem was a popular rifle when it come out in the Mid 60's. I made several conversions and they were quit a nice little rifle.

First the plastic parts had to go, rib on barrel, plastic guard changed to metal, bolt handle dog leg to spoon handle welded on to original , a release on the left side of stock with a push button to remove bolt, and a complete reshaping of the stock to get rid of the square shape, and a cut checkering to match the new shape.

I made several of these changes for customers, but I don't have any pictures of this changed style of rifle. I didn't mark the rifles so if you see one in a gun show that fits my description it may be one of my conversions.

I have 600's in .222 Rem and .350 Rem Mag; and a 600 Mohawk in .308 Win. All 18.5" barrels.

The .308 is really handy, I magna-ported the barrel and it stays down versus jumping! Was shooting some Federal Blue box 150 grs, but going to switch to my 165 gr Aframe hand loads I use in my other 308s. That Fed ammo was very temp sensitive.

I worked up a 225 gr gameking and 250 gr partition load for the 350. Not that fast since I used Norma 203B. Most folks use a faster powder, but the only thing I have that is faster is some Alliant 2400 (Danger) and Accurate 2230 (probably too fast and I have it for my 458 WM).

I'd also recommend getting an after market bottom metal that replicates the factory plastic. They fit right in perfect and allow proper screw torque.

Carpetman 1,

I can't remember how I made the parts, but you might find them in the Gun Digest books written back in the 60's. Tommy Bish or Ralph Walker wrote the articles on some of their conversions back then. I don't find any notes in my collection since that was over 50 yrs ago.

The Mohawks didn't have a vent rib and 308 has regular wood - looks pretty good.

I've had a couple 660's...without the plastic vent rib. They were fine looking rifles to me but neither shot very well, as I look back. I didn't really know what good shooting was at the time and still managed killed a pile of deer with them.
Maybe it was MY shooting skills at the time! LOL

Well they are after all a carbine so short, handy and quick into action. Your welcome about the Warthog part. Big Grin

The 600/660/Mohawks are quite popular in my neck of the woods.

They are old enough that the trigger mechanism needs total disassembly and cleaning. If not the old oil will oxidize and turn to glue. Results are accidental discharge usually when the safety is moved to fire position. Remington paid the highest settlement ever paid on this rifle involving a fatal accident. Remington issued a recall on this rifle. All they did was disable the bolt lock/safety to allow you to open the bolt while on safe position for unloading.

I gave my son a new Rem 660 in 6mm for his first deer rifle. Was later lost or stolen.

All of this series of 600's would shoot under moa. The 350 Rem Mag is the holy grail for Elk in dark timber.

I have killed about 25 caribou with one shot each with a Remington 660 in 6.5 Rem Mag. 120-130 grain bullets through the chest and bingo... they are down ready for processing. Also superb accuracy. I eventually shot out the barrel and it now wears a 23" PacNor supermatch. Better speeds (150fps) and the accuracy is almost as good as the original Remington barrel!
I also have a 600 and a 660 in 350 Rem Mag. The 600 has a Williams reciever sight and the 660 has a scope. Very accurate as well and 250 grain bullets at 24-2500fps really wreck moose.

Thanks for your comments, fellas.
My 6.5 now has a Leupold 3.5-10x scope which I know is a bit overkill but it was available cheap. Will order metal trigger guard and plate, and a bolt removal assembly. Will get a slip on pad as on the .350 to lengthen the pull. Today I gave the 6.5 to my doc to practice with to see if he likes it and he'll take either the 6.5 or the .350 wiht him when we fly in for caribou in the Talkeetna Mts., August 31.

Yeah, apparently Remington and Dupont were having a luv fest back in the '60's and everything had to be plastic that could be plastic. The problem is that plastic has a shelf life. Replace all you can with metal. If you can find a rib get it 'cause that one will crack and fail.

Yeah, I've been looking forever for a Model 600 in .350 Rem Mag that's still in decent shape. Maybe one that wasn't shot much over the years. ... Or failing that, a Model 673 Guide Gun in .350RM.

I agree about replacing the plastic parts with aftermarket metal parts, as well as the bolt-removal upgrade.

Man, in that "carbine" package the 350 Remmy Mag has to kick worse than most Weatherbys. No doubt it stands both you and the moose up when it goes bang! Installing a thick Kick-Eeez recoil pad would maybe mitigate felt recoil just a tad.

My 600 in .350 was purchased in 2010 from a gent in New Hampshire who bought it new in the late 1960s for deer and black bear. He shot it seven times to sight in the scope and it kicked him so hard he put it away. It stayed in the same closet without being touched for just over 50 years until I bought it. It was covered with 1/8 inch of dust. I removed the old 4x scope and added the Leupold.

I added the slip on pad to bring the pull to my desired 14 3/4" (or close to it). I will do the same to the 6.5 M-600 I bought a month or two ago. I always wanted a pair.

The .350 came with 33 rounds of factory ammo in the original boxes (also dust covered) and I bought another 100 rounds of brass and dies.

The 6.5 came with six boxes of factory ammo and 5 boxes of new primed brass. I added a Leupold 3.5-10x scope (over kill).

I just sold an old .300 Weatherby ((1949) and will sell now my .270 WCF in an old Weatherby rifle (1952) and will use the two .600s for loner rifles for friends who come to hunt caribou with me here in Alaska.

My only other scoped rifle is my 450-400 with a Swarovski 1 1/4 to 4x, 30mm.

Thanks for all of your comments, gents.
