OK, so 35 is not the most popular caliber.

But if you're a 35 caliber nut like some of us, what is your favorite round?

Mine is the 35 Whelen. I've taken it to Africa a couple of times, and have taken Elk & Moose with mine.

I own a 358 STA and want a 358 Norma some day.

Go ahead and tell me all of the 35s you own if you like, but remember, you must also choose a favorite!

Let the games begin...

358 Win. In 1971 as a teenager I read Charles Askin's great book about hunting in Africa and Indo China. He took a Savage 99 in 358 Win to Africa.

It was another 25 years before I manage to get myself a 358 Win. I found 2 rifles and swapped the barrels and kept the Mod 70 in 358 and sold the Mod 88 in 243!

20 inch barrel and synthetic stock made it the perfect bush rifle. Great performance on big red deer with the 225gr Sierra GK.

I then moved on to the even better 9.3X62!

Well the only .35 I presently own is a .350RM in a Remington 673. I like the cartridge quite a bit with 225gr Nosler Partitions.

If I had to choose another I've always had the urge for a .358 Norma!

350 Rem Mag; I have four of them. Second is the 35 Rem; I have three. I have always liked the 35 caliber, since 1960. Everyone else liked 30-30 (deer); I preferred the 35 Rem.

Let's see, I have a .35 Remington, a .358 Winchester, a 9X56 M/S, a 9X57 Mauser, a .35 Whelen, a .35 Brown Improved Whelen, a .35 Newton, a .358 Norma Magnum, a .35 Rigby Magnum and a .350 G&H Magnum. You might say that I'm hooked on .35 caliber.

My favorite? The one I've used the most is the 9X57, with the .358 Winchester close behind. The 9X57 fits so nicely in a 98 Mauser action and has a little more "Oomph" than the .358, but I doubt if a deer would ever notice it.

I was shooting a .300 Winny a .340 Wby and a .338 Lapua as were my son and grandsons. We hunted both Deer and Elk. Needing additional rifles with the increase in hunting grandsons I started thinking and studying the .35’s. I am a nut for speed and just when I was trying to make up my mind I was lucky to spot the fastest 35 in a .358 STA from the Winchester Custom Shop at a reasonable price and fell in love. Within 6 months after shooting the STA I was lucky to find another Custom with a Lilja barrel on a post 64 Winchester action that is equally as accurate as the first STA. Now we can be well gunned no matter where we choose to hunt the larger game in country that holds Bears or other dangerous game that deserves great respect. In conclusion the .358 STA in our choice as favorite .35 chambering. Good Shooting.

Lets see, out of:
351 SL
35 Rem
358 Win
35 Whelen
358 Norma

Favorite has to be the 35 Whelen, with it's 250gr partition at 2700 fps it will do all the others will do, and more than most of the other 35's I have.

Mine is the 35 Whelen AI 40° shoulder. I have a David Gentry Rough Rider built on a Mark X Mauser with a 24" 14 twist stainless barrel. Superbly accurate and versatile, I've loaded .357 handgun bullets at gallery speeds up to Hawk 270 grainers at 2450 (shown below). For most of my hunting I settled on the 250 Nosler Partition over Alliant's PP-2000MR powder for a muzzle velocity of 2620, a real killer.

Without a doubt the 35 Whelen with a 250 grain Partition. Could hunt the rest of my life with that combination and be content. I've taken moose and caribou with mine. No elk or deer. Moose and caribou are none too fond of it.

I've always thought I'd like to play with a 358 Norma or an STA, but I have several rifles in the large/medium category so another 35 would be redundant.

I have had a 35 Rem, 358 Win and 35 Whelen. I still have the Whelen, built on an M-98 and it will be buried with me. The one I still wish I had though is a 348 Win, just because the model 71 is such a sweet rifle. But alas, I dont have one. Love the Whelen though.

Mine is a 35 Whelen Ackley Improved custom on a Springfield 1903 action. Out of a 22" Shilen barrel it gets 2700 fps with 250 grain Hornady Interlock bullets, and kills elk very effectively.

358 winchester - i've built, bought, had, quite a few of these, it was my "dream" caliber, from an engineers point of view, along with the 7x64 .. i have, and love, both ...

remember that little short action mexican mauser 36, with a tiny, soda straw barrel and a synthetic stock, with irons, just for a backpacking rifle?

yeah, i built that one, too

My favorite is a combination of rifle/cartridge. The Model 700 Classic, rechambered to the Ackley Improved. At faster speeds, it handled the Barnes 250X at 2600 and the Woodleigh 310 at 2400fps. The Barnes 200X was 2970 and the newer 200 TTSX 2950. I found out "however" that my "favorite loads" all ran very high pressures. So I got "spoiled" to how those speeds/bullets killed bigger animals, so to speak. I was going to "try out" a 26 inch barreled 358 Norma Mag, but Obammacare Taxes made me sell. I am in the process of replacing the Mod 700 Classic with a Mod 77 20" 338 RCM. I just like a short, handy, lighter weight "thumper" in the woods. Smiler

My favorite is one of my 9x57 Mausers. They're just fun to shoot, carry, and look good.

My more practical 35 is my Whelen. Looks a lot like Whelenite's only with a 19" barrel. Had an AI version once, traded it for a bird dog that I ended up being allergic to.

But I really like my Rem 760 in .35 Rem.

My fav 35 is a stainless L-frame 6" Smith in a 357 mag.

I know I'm a lightweight when my favorite is a 20 Practical right now.

Closest I get in rifles is a 338WM and then I jump to 416.

I know, I don't know what I'm missing.

If I've counted correctly, it appears 13 out of 20 responses so far go to the 35 Whelen.

It's not the fastest, nor the slowest 35. Perhaps like mamma bear's porridge, it's just right!

Keep the votes coming. Let's see where this 35 caliber poll ends up...

I actually prefer the Winchester as I like my Lake City cases to load forever. But have been exposed to Winchester, Whelen, 350 Rem Mag.s, 9.3X57, X62 and a few X74s. Then there is what may win the in the long run, a Steyr M/S in 9x56MM, one of the most elegant arms I have ever owned. I'm partial to it right now. But there is that 7600 rebored to 358 Winchester. How inelegant but so fun and precise to shoot. Still I will go to the 9X56 for pride of ownership. All of the above would do for most hunting. I could do Africa with most of them. Thanks and Be Well, Packy.

Ended up giving the dog away to someone on this forum. Couldn't stand the thought of it having to spend a winter outside. Damn nice dog too! Too bad I broke out in hives everytime I got near it. At least the guy I trade the rifle to got a nice rifle. Not fancy but a good shooter and very effective.

If we are throwing the .366's in with the .35's my vote may go to the 9.3x64... have a Lon Paul rifle so chambered that is just a gem.

To keep the flow going...35 Whelen for me as well. Mine is a conglomerate of parts I accumulated. A Remington branded Zastava 98 clone for an action, J C Higgins stock, a stainless steel 1-14" twist #3 contour Shilen barrel I picked up at one of their swap meets.

I had a local Smith screw on the barrel and I modified the stock for a Timney trigger and refinished it. With its 22.5" barrel, a very handy and potent deep woods rifle.

It is a toss up between the .35 Whelen Model 95 lever action that Duane Wiebe built for me or my .358 Norma on a 1903 Springfield double heat-treat action. I shoot 250-grain partitions in the Whelen and 225-grain partitions in the Norma.

For some reason, I have always been a .35 fan. I keep being temped to have a .308 Model 88 rebored to .358 Winchester, I am still trying to figure out a reason to have a .35 Remington so that I can justify buying one, and I think Phurley5 is on to something with the .358 STA. I have twice started to build one on a stainless action with a laminated stock as a whack anything anywhere in North America gun.

Now that sounds like two very interesting rifles!

Only thing I'd do differently for myself, would be to use the 250 in the Whelen as you (and I) do, but the 280 SAF in the Norma. I really am anxious some day to build a Norma for that very bullet. This year I took a Shiras Moose with the 280 SAF in my Whelen, but I think in the Norma, that bullet would really shine.

Just have one and it's a 358 Win in a Ruger M77 Hawkeye SS. It is probably my favorite rifle and goes hunting the most. At one time, I wanted a 35 Whelen but opted for a 9.3x62 instead.

My Ruger M77 Hawkeye SSs are among my favorite rifles as well. That 358 of yours must be sweet. I don't have a 358, probably because I have 35 Whelens in that rifle; plus 280 Rem., 7mmRem. Mag., 30-06, and 338 WM.

I only listed the ones that hold a place in my imagination, heart and hands. The song of the 358 Norma never made me dance. I just keep thinking that Inwould rather have a 35 newton If I wanted more than a Whelen. It is harder to have more cool factor than a 35 Newton. It is the Paul Newman/Steve McQueen of 35s.
