I recently took family and friends to Cape Cod and the surrounding areas for some fishing. We had an outstanding time catching Black Sea Bass, Bluefish and Striper's. The bite was on fire! I usually travel to Massachusetts to hunt sea ducks and other waterfowl but I was keen to try the fishing, and it didn't let me down. We caught Black Sea Bass up to 25 inches, nice eating size Bluefish and everyone caught Striper's over 25 pounds. I can't wait to return for Blue fin Tuna and as always, I'll be there for the waterfowl season.
Big bull Sea Bass 25"

10 years old with his 39.6" Striper

On ice!

44 inches, my best so far!

School Striper's in the rip tide; every cast!

Little man with one of his Striper's

Fish on! We used large top water and swim baits

Bluefish

If you want to experience some outstanding saltwater fishing, including Blue fin Tuna, Mako & Thresher Shark, contact me and I'll book your private trip or put you with a group. Standard fishing is $850 per day (up to 6 persons). Tuna fishing is $1100 per day (up to 4 persons). I also organize hunting for Sea ducks, Brant, Canada geese, Divers and puddle ducks in MA; $350 per day per person. LDK

hard to beat a fresh Bluefish /AUS Tailor, grilled with lashing of butter , skin side down, straight out of the water ( useless 24 hrs old).

How do you plan on catching your BFT when season rolls around, plugging or STD game gear.

You did not see any of those killer whales while you were out did you?
I am betting that they may add some excitement to the fishery.

May want to place a copy of this post down in the fish section at the bottom also.

DenisB, apologies for the late reply, I have been in Africa. BFT's are caught with both live bait and surface plugs. I agree on the Blue's. We fillet and fry them as well. Excellent
TC, we did see some whales but too far to ID. Besides, the Striper bite was non stop, so I really wasn't looking. Cheers, LDK

It was Bill. The Black bass were caught about every 1 out of 3 casts on average. Sometimes every cast. Bluefish on the first day were slow on casting but best on trolling in a small area. 2nd day same on the Black bass but we got a call and moved to a rip tide where almost every cast you had either a Bluefish or Striper on your line. 3rd day was fishing for trophy Stripers. 1 out of 2 casts were productive. We had a great time and brought home some excellent eating fish.

Years ago I subscribed to Saltwater Sportsman magazine and became somewhat familiar with the wonderful surf fishing opportunities on the East Coast. With blues, don't you need to bleed and ice them immediately to have superior table fare?

That's a matter of choice Bill. I've caught many small blue's (3 lbs average) in the gulf (FL) and never bled them. Put them in the ice chest but never bled them. The key to me is to remove the dark brown layer that lies just under the skin. Using a sharp fillet knife, I skim off the top layer, then I "V" out the deeper layer in the lateral line. Once the meat is free of this high fat/oil layer, it is excellent. I prefer it fried but you can broil or grill it, even use it in ceviche. Some however, believe you must bleed them immediately. I have done such and found no difference in taste or flavor. I will add that Bluefish is best eaten fresh. Once frozen by standard methods, shelf life is quite restricted. Vacuum packing is best.

Its prudent to bleed any fish to be consumed.
Some have strong blood flavours , all have a buildup of lactic acid in the blood from the fight.
The blood meat along the lateral line under the skin has strong flavours, it can be removed prior to cooking fairly easily on thick & firm bodied fish, but is rather problematic on skinnier fish with soft flesh.
Minimising the buildup of strong flavours from lateral line blood meat during cooking on skinnier soft fleshed fish is a matter of cooking technique & grilling from fleshside up is a good technique that minimises the buildup of strong flavours in the "white" meat.

I always flip strong flavoured grilled fillets over with skin side up & remove skin & lateral line blood meat before adding condiments & consumption.
For bluefish/tailor the only condiments I use after grilling with lashings of butter are fresh lemon juice & sometimes a light dusting of fresh ground pepper.
I prefer the "natural" flavours of individual fish species............you may prefer strongly flavoured condiments.
