David: Those are very nice points, and made of some gorgeous rock. Mind identifying?
Do you use a combination of percussion and pressure or are you mostly a pressure man?

Sorry for the slow reply everyone, I've been rather busy lately and forgot to check back here. Thank you all for the compliments. I hope to get back to knapping this winter after a long absence. Bill, the materials are starting at the left, top row: obsidian, heat treated TN chert, heat treated (ht) buffalo river chert (TN), ht western material I bought?, Dover chert (TN), Dover chert (TN), agatized coral (FL), agatized coral (FL). Bottom row L-R; Cobden (MO), chalcedony (FL), Brazilian agate, Fort Payne (TN), ht Buffalo river chert, FT Payne creek coble (TN) and petrified wood (MT). I used both percussion and pressure on some and sawed blanks with pressure on expensive material.

I'm so bad at this. I've been trying to learn to knapp but I just suck at it so bad. I went to a knap in the other day and made a point that I am going to install on a hazelwood shaft and then fletch with some turkey feathers.
Then I'm going to shoot it at a squirrel because it would not be humane to shoot this "sort of" sharp rock at anything bigger. Frowner

Frank, I'm pretty lame at knapping, too, even after turning many, many pounds of promising obsidian to useless flakes spattered with my own blood.

hilbily

But I have found if I practice at it and keep trying, I do improve a little. I have only used percussion, reserving the pressure flaking for final touch-up and notching. There are some really good resources here:

David, I was out on the banks of the Rogue River yesterday looking for jasper for you, and came up mostly empty. The river is high and off color with the winter weather. I have not forgotten!!

here is a point I made to prove a "point" to some fellows...fat, crude, short...ugly point. But the edge was sharp....

I killed wild pig with it, then missed one and broke the point. I resharpened it and killed another pig and broke the point again.

You do not need perfect points to kill stuff with, only sharp ones...

I look at original points and sometimes think how did they kill anything with this ugly rock??? Big Grin

As I understand it, the high point in flint knapping was the period of time when humans were throwing spears at mastadons. Huge animal with thick skin. Very slow projectile. So they points were made to perfection, because perfection was just good enough.
The atlatl added a lot of speed to the dart and animals were getting smaller. And now, with a shaft traveling over 180fps it is no trick to drive a sharp edge through a deer. Even a broken point is deadly.

the bottom point is mahoghany obsidian, it killed a deer, passing thru after breaking much of the point off on an impact fracture with the leg bone. It has been reworked for more hunting.

Top point killed a 365# pig, shot low thru the heart. Pig ran maybe 75 yards and down.

D, I'm a fan of Big Sandy type points too. They seem to have lasted the longest throughout time. Some friends found some 300 of them amongst 13 caches of Benton blades, bone hair pins and other artifacts in a shell midden.

I've been invited to a knap-in not far from me. I had already been planning on going for the day, with much enthusiasm.
Now I have been informed there will also be a 2 day class on using wood billets to work quartzite. Quartzite is the only local stone we have and the stuff is just horrible. It seems like the perfect opportunity for me, but I don't know if I can sit there and do this for 3 days.

beautiful workmanship.

There is a large vein of obsidian about 200 miles west of the ID/OR border. There are at least a dozen or more beds of obsidian. One is orange and ivory streaked. The local guys call the vein the "pumpkin patch".

Lots of Obsidian comes from Glass Butte's as well as Mexico. There are many varieties such as "snow flake, mahogany, rainbow, Burn's green, silver sheen" etc. Some of these are varieties of sheen but it's hard to tell from a photo. Sunlight really lights them up.

But I favor agate the most

David, somehow I had missed your agate points. Just lovely! The Dagelma tribes along the Rogue River in southern Oregon also seemed to favor agate as well as the green, red and maize colored jaspers common in this river basin. I have seen some Gunther-barbed points of agate that take your breath away.

I love 'gem points' from the northwest. I started collecting those back in the early 1980s. Amazing material that comes from the west coast. I read an article about a guy from New York buying all he could find back when they were building dams along the Columbia. He paid 10 cents for perfect points. Most construction families would dig in trenches their husband/father dug with a back hoe before leaving for work each morning. I've seen some incredible pieces from your State. I have some Montana agate pieces I need to get sawed and heat treated. I hope to get than done by late Winter and back to knapping by Spring. Thanks for the compliment!

What percent of the time do you have one break on you in the final stages?

Knapp some more and make a smaller point, of start anew?

David, there is a blood chert in Southern California on the way to Nevada that makes a really lovely point. You can find references to it over at Paleo Planet.

Sorry I have visited this post in a long time. Thank you straddling, I appreciate it.
TC: From time to time they will break, especially in the final thinning stages or more so when making deep notches. Sometimes it's due to a flaw/inclusion in the material or sometimes it's due to not having the piece properly supported. It's been a year since I knapped and that was only one point.
Bill: I'll look for it, not sure if I've seen it before but know I haven't had any in hand. Weather here is finally getting warm but raining often which brings high humidity. I'm hoping to start on the obsidian soon. Again, thank you!
