I am tired of shopping at Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops for stuff that's not really very good quality (most of it anyway)

Where do you buy most of your good quality hunting and other outdoor clothing?

Sportsman’s Guide has good deals sometimes. Some of their stuff is junk but if you know what you want and they have it, it’s usually worth the money. I do a lot of shopping on eBay. With a little searching you can usually find new stuff someone bought and never used for a bargain.

I do shop at Cabelas and Bass Pro as well as all the major outdoor stores. But mostly just to get my hands on an item and check quality/fit. Then buy elsewhere.

I also like to shop directly from the manufacturer. That is if they sell direct.

As a general rule, people are nuts!

My hunting clothes are the same clothes I work cattle or rope steers in..and mostly worm plumb out...Even in Africa I wear wranglers and green or tan Khaki shirts, lace up ropers or tennis shoes..A lot of folks are doing that these days.

I buy most of mine from Cabelas. Never had any problem with them. They do also sell other brands there too but they cost much more for little performance gain.

I bought a pair of there packable rain gear a few years ago thinking they would only last for the hunt I was going on but surprisingly they now are six years old and have been on several mountain hunts. They are still going strong.

I buy a lot of Dickies work clothes in tan, green, or brown. It's expensive tough and similar in quality to Carhartt.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Quality stuff (boots, rain gear, cold weather ) - I go to rei. No cammo but the gear is a quality stuff.

Africa hunting - cheap stuff at academy - I leave it all behind.

Offshore fishing stuff - I am picky - very specific stuff from 3-4 places.

I buy high quality outdoor clothing from places like REI, Moosejaw, Backcountry.com, and supplement with hunting specific clothing from Sitka (fits me better than KUIU)

Been relying on technical gear from REI and Moosejaw for years. Last couple of years I have invested in Sitka for the same reason: it’s truly technical gear that I know will last and not fail. Also, the pattern are ideal.

Actually I use a lot of stuff from REI too (I have a very low member number dating from the 1960's) but they often charge suggested retail and sometimes more. They are also major contributors to several animal rights groups.

REI's gear is great but don't try to get any help from their staff. The days are long gone when they only had one store in Seattle staffed by mountain bums who knew what they were talking about and the store was a true Co-op.

But no matter where I buy stuff I just wish they would offer it in plain old hunter green. Unless your sitting in a tree stand I never could see the use for camo on a rifle hunter.

Kuiu, First Lite, and I have quite a bit of German stuff from my time, mostly from Frankonia (Merkel, Harkila, Blaser).

The Euro stuff is trash compared to Kuiu and First Lite.

Browning has a good couple of outdoor clothing lines. I like there stuff a lot, and have a bit of it.

Not sure if REI donates money to PETA; but PETA does harass REI.

I buy from Kuiu and REI mainly. Some Filson. Cotton shorts for hot weather from Cabelas. I also buy brands from Amazon out of convenience, including some of the brands I'd normally buy at REI like Prana and Mammut.

One for the ladies...there is a new U.K. website that specialises in ladies hunting clothes. Just a few brands on there at the moment but they are adding brands and working on a safari collection to introduce.

Check it out www.ladyhunter.club

Wherever you buy make sure they support hunting. A lot of the big name hiking/outdoor gear companies do not.

I bought quite a bit from Cabela's before the buy out. For New England stand hunting for whitetails, they had good products. I also have a decent cache of their Serengeti safari shirts and 7 pocket shorts/pants for Africa trips.

I bought a full set of Sitka gear before my Newfoundland trip last year and I'm a convert. Recently purchased a few items from Kuiu (camp sweater and a peleton wool baselayer) and I'm a fan thusfar. Might try a pair of First Lite Obsidian merino pants this fall.

I wear Carhart jeans, they come in green/gray depending on the dye lot, and Khaki. I think Midway sells them. They shed thorns and are pretty much tsetsi proof. For shirts, I use TAG mostly. Big variations on dye lots there, but doesn't really matter. Do resew all the buttons on the TAG shirts as soon as you get them. And a sweater. Sometimes use military surplus and I found an outfit that sells new military style sweaters on line. Can't remember the name. Pretty much all I need.

I went Kuiu for my technical gear and have been very happy with it. The challenge is getting it fitted. I did my entire outfit at the SCI convention at the KUIU booth.

Darn Tough socks are the absolute best!

I still have several of the Cabelas safari shirts from the old days that still go to Africa with me. Green and Tan cotton shorts are what I wear 90% of the time in Africa..

When Kuiu came out with a military discount I switched to them. Their discount is nice, but not huge.

I have a ton of Swazi picked up on a Christmas sale. Great stuff, traditional not modern like Kuiu and Sitka.

Kryptek is expensive but he uses some top end fabrics.

Sitka is expensive, but they have a huge military discount. I am eyeing some pieces.

First Lite has a military discount, their production quality is not as good as Sikta or Kuiu. But their wool stuff is beyond compare to traditional modern mountain based hunting clothing.

Browning has great gear, price is not cheap. There are some very good military discounts and I have used some of their stuff before.

Never tried Eberlestock, Stone Glacier or anyone else. Never seen it in a store.

Used to have a bit of Euro-stuff; Blaser, Fjallraven, Norronia, Laksen and others. Expensive stuff made for people who sleep in a hotel and sit in a covered high seat when they hunt.

There are quite a few Scandanavian companies, Swed-Team, Harkila and others. Some are good, some are the same as the Euro stuff.

Sounds more like a fashion show than needed hunting clothing..In the far North yes cold weather clothing is needed in below zero weather, but Africa, naw! wranglers, tennis shoes, baseball cap, long sleeve shirt and bug spray..white sox but no white clothing..Tetsi's like the green stuff, Khaki is best..No need for camo and is illegal in some countries..Don't wear shorts and skip the sox like your PH, he is immune you are not!! tu2

Switched to Kuiu as I’m planning for a sheep hunt and wanted to upgrade my gear. So far I really
Like it. However, some of the sizes are tough to get correct. I bout a medium rain jacket and it fit perfectly. I bought a medium size lightweight shell jacket and it’s too small.
