Have a new toy. Sake A7 Roughtech with 26” bbl. Have completed bbl. seasoning using 168 SMK that print sub .5 groups. Now looking for a good long range load. Have 162SST and 160 Accubonds, WLRM, 215M and Rem. 9 1/2 primers along with standard primers. Powder, IMR4831, H4831SC, Retumbo, H4350, IMR4350, VArget, N540, N550. Will be used for Mulies, elk, wt, perhaps ‘lopers. Have plenty of time and access to 500 yd. range, maybe longer. Thanks for the input. MTG

Why not start with the load you are using for the 168s with the others and see what happens.

MTG….Assuming you are looking for a hunting load. Have had good results with near max listed loads of H4831SC and the Nosler 140gr Partitions for most things, moved to the 160’s for bigger game. Twist rate only gave acceptable results with the 175’s. Give all of them a try and see what works for you….Carl

Try H-1000 with the 160-grain Nosler Accubond. Good luck. The Vihtavouri powders are well represented in their latest reloading manual.

Used 160gr Sierra Gameking SPBT in my 7x61S&H which was a factory forerunner of the 7mmRM. Had a 26" barrel and loaded to an honest 3000fps with IMR4831. At least accuracy is guaranteed with Sierras. Shot for several decades with this load on red, fallow and whitetail deer plus tahr and chamois. Hits long and hard.

My 7mm Mag likes 73gr of retumbo with 160gr
Accubonds at 3.280OAL with 215M primers.For
3067fps SD of 5.1. Very Accurate. 67.0gr of
Norma MRP gave 3080fps with Trophy Bonded Tipped
3.290 OAL All loads use Hornady cases. 66gr
of RL23 gave 3070fps with SD of 8.2. using
160gr Accubonds. 215M primers Hornady cases
and OAL was 3.300. RL26 gave over 3100fps but
was a little hot so I left load off. RL23 was
most accurate. Others were very close behind.

I've always found 7828 to be a go to powder in the 7mm Rem. The new IMR 7977 is also very good

I might be imagining things, but I find the recoil of 7828 somehow nicer than RL22.
Normally 140-grainers are the go-go load, with a box of 175s in reserve (they are very old, I may never use them).

When I shoot my 7mm Mag, which I rarely do due to that tiny little hole in the barrel, I use RL25.
I just got some Hornady ELD-X 162 grainers to try too. Skinny little things; I suppose they can be used for small deer and similar pests.
Thanks, Elmer.

I have a 7mm Wea mag, similar cartridge. In mine I've tried many of the slow burners and the hands down best has been Norma MRP for velocity and accuracy. I get .75 moa and 3156 ft/sec with the 175 gr Hornady spt. Rl-25 has also been good but not as good as the MRP. Rl-22 gave me decent accuracy but the vel wasn't as good. I hit pressure before I got to 3000 ft/sec.

"300 Win mag loaded with a 250 gr Barnes made a good deer load". Elmer Keith

The last time I went to the range the MRP
loads were the most accurate in my 7mm Remington
Mag. Probably use that load on my next hunt. MRP
also proved very accurate in my 338 Win Mag with
210gr Nosler Partitions. 3017fps.

I threw out all my RL-22 and never touched the stuff again after trying the book loads in my 7mm Rem Mag with 160 AccuBonds and 162 A MAx.

I will say that the RL 25 was a good powder for mine and gave excellent velocity.

But I went to the 7828 and the MRP instead. For hunting loads in mine I use the Unobtanium Winchester 780 that I still have around and the Federal 215 GM Mag primers. Goes fast and no sticky bolt ever. That 780 stuff was gold to me and of course Winchester quit making or selling it.

I hunted for a number of years almost exclusively with 160 and 175 gr. Nosler partitions in a Rem. 700 in 7mm Rem. Mag. Did use some 162 gr. Hornady BTSPs for pronghorns. I used Win. brass and Fed. 215 primers and had good luck with H-4831, RL-22, and H-1000. Best overall results in my rifle were with H-1000. I would start with H-1000 and RL-22.

My recipe, tested on chamois, mouflon and roe deer:
67,5 grs of Vihtavuori N560
Barnes TTSX 140 grs
CCI Magnum primer
OAL 3,35" (85.1 mm)
MV 946 m/s = 3103 fps

MRP and RL-22 are the same powder, manufactured by Nobel in Sweden and sold under the Norma and the Alliant labels. However, from very early on, it has been apparent than the individual lots of this powder, regardless of whose label is on it, vary in burning characteristics somewhat more than most canister grade powders. If you find a lot that you like it is best to stock up on that single lot because the next can of "either" powder you buy may not perform the way your previous can did.

Have to disagree I don,t think RL22 and Norma
MRP the same powder. First they are a different color. Second in every case I,ve used both you
have load more MRP to get or exceed the velocity
of RL22. Third MRP will always give higher velocity than RL22 if you load more powder.
without getting pressure signs. MRP must be a
little slower because it produces more velocity
with heavier bullets. Just my 2 cents.

I've loaded 162g Nos Solid Bases (no longer available, predecessor to the ballistic tips) using WC 860 powder. The WC860 powder can be used using the load data from Hodgdon 870 or AA 8700.

I've loaded 79 grains (maximum load) of this powder with 162g Solid Base and have had excellent results.
