Ranger02Favorite 338 Win Mag Loads
Just started reloading for my new 338 win mag. I'm interested to know what everyone's favorite load is for their 338 win mag.

Bear in FairbanksThe load I use in my .338 Mag. is 73 grs. of Rldr-22 and a 225 gr. NorthFork for 2800 fps. Consistant groups of around an inch. I find NF's to be slightly more accurate in the .338 and they don't lose as much weight as a Partition.
I know Partitions are desigend to lose around 15% of their weight, as I recall but I've found NF's to perform even better. I have a 225 gr. NF on my desk that I took from the 1st moose I shot. It's a perfect textbook mushroom and weighs something like 218 grs. True, they cost more but they are designed for hunting - ya don't usually shoot a box of them at the range every day. Good luck.

R FlowersI am not sure what bullet weight you are interested in so I will list several loads that shoot well in my .338 Win Mag:
Win case/Fed 215M primer/74 grains IMR 4831/200 grain Nosler BT (you would now have to substitute the 200 grain Accubond)/velocity 2955 fps.
Win case/Fed 215M/71 grains H 4350/225 grain Nosler Partition/velocity 2850 fps.
Win case/CCI 250/70 grains IMR 4350/250 grain Sierra BT/velocity 2762 fps. (Too hot with Fed215 primers)
Win case/CCI 200/72 grains RL 19/250 grain Sierra BT/velocity 2754 fps. (Again note primer)
All these loads consistantly shoot under an inch in my Remington 700 Classic, sometimes into a 1/2 inch if I do my part.

onefunzr2My load data using VihtaVouri N550 powder in my Blaser R93:
Winchester case
Hornady 225gr Spire point bullet, OAL 2.655" to datum line
Winchester mag primer
68.9gr N550
Yields 2845 fps, extreme spread of 19 and Standard Deviation of 10.
Very accurate

ClemRL19 behind a 250 grain Nosler Accubond and IMR4350 behind a 225 grain Hornady Interbond work well in mine. I think the Accubond load would make a nice moose thumper.

Chris01I use 73grs/IMR4831/225gr Hornady Interlock SP @ 2850fps. This load shoots under an inch in my two Rem700's.

Antelope SniperHere's the combinations I've had good luck with.
Win Brass
WMRP
200gr BT, 200gr AB, 225gr AB.
max loads of H4350, or H4831.
Any of these in combination will shoot submoa, the 200gr BT and H4350 has shoot 1/2 MOA.

sep67.5 grains IMR 4350 and 225 grain Barnes TTSX works for me in my Browning A-bolt and 68.5 grains IMR 4350 with the same bullet works good in my Weatherby Vanguard submoa. This summer I'm gonna try H4350 cause it's reported to be less temperature sensitive than its IMR cousin.

StonecreekAll of my best .338 loads are with H4831. In most full-pressure loads it has to be compressed a bit, but I've always found a bit of compression to be helpful to the consistency of ignition and low velocity variation.
I'm able to get 2900 fps out of a 225 grain bullet (the heaviest I've found need for) with XX grains of H4831. Since guns and chambers vary, and there are at least four different versions of "H4831" (not to be confused with the significantly different IMR 4831 nor with clones from Accurate Arms) I won't mention an exact charge. Just be prepared to compress your charge slightly and work up to a point at which you are still comfortable with the pressures. I've had excellent luck with this powder in every .338 I've owned and wouldn't think of using any other powder in a .338.

Reloader-17 is an emerging favorite for this caliber.
For those who shoot a .338 WM...if you have not tried it...you should give it a whirl!

TX NimrodMy current favorite is 33.0 grains of BlueDot under a Hornady 200 SP. Produces about 2350 fps, 'quiet' with 'low' recoil, and kills Texas deer as dead as any .30-06 does. Work up from below if you dare to use BD.

When I lived in Alaska I used a 210 Nosler and 76 grains of RL-19. Killed the moose just fine too.

bja105I have used full power loads with 200 grain Hornady or Ballistic tips with H4350 or R-19, all worked just fine.
For a good deer load and sensible, but not light, recoil, I suggest medium loads of IMR4064 and 200 grain ballistic tips, with a standard primer. This has been the best accuracy load in two rifles, and the trajectory is fine for normal hunting ranges. We shoot 300-500 yards at steel targets with this load.
I tried the Blue Dot load a couple years ago. 2 of 10 shots gave very high pressure signs, that was enough for me. That was the last time I took someone's charge recommendation without working up.
