Top accuracy in .222 Rem
Hi everybody! The .222 Rem is one of the most accurate cartridges in the world, and Im a lucky owner of a Sako Vixen in this caliber. I know there are a lot of .222 Rem owners in this forum, and I guess Im not alone finding it interesting to read about your favorite loads.

Please share your experiences with all of us [Roll Eyes] Things that will bee interesting to know is, what kind of rifle you use, twist of rate, bullet, powder, primer and group size.

well I have a 725 Remington. mine has two pet loads. 52 speer over 23gr of BL-C and a CCI sr primer and a 50 t-n-t over 21 gr of Re. 7 and the same cci primer. My granpa uses BL c and imr 5895 interchangably. Mine is all factory original with the exeption of being pillar bedded. It averages about .5 to .675 inches

I am on my second Rem. 700 in .222 Rem. (about 12,000 rounds wore out the barrel of the first one). My favorite load is either the 50 gr. Sierra semispitzer or the 50 gr. Rem. Core-Lokt HP, Rem. brass, Rem. 7-1/2 primer, and 25.0 grs. of BL-C(2). Start a little low and work up. Hornady says they get their best accuracy, and use it for testing all their .22 cal. bullets, with 23.0 grs. of BL-C(2). The 25.0 gr. shoots great in my rifle, and as I use it for varmints I want the extra velocity.

Mine is a Sako L491 with heavy barrel that I bought sight unseen over the phone from a dealer. I've only had it 6 months but it is devestatingly accurate and shows a liking for fast powder and light bullets.

Twist 1 in 14" (22")
Brass Sako
Primers CCI BR4
Powder VVN120

Hornady 40gr V Max

20.9gr for 3,550fps
Group size 0.24" for 3

Berger 30gr MEF

22gr for 3,925fps
Group size 0.19" for 3

I am happy. Rabbits out to 275yds (to date) are not. The goal was magpies at 300yds - soon I will find one on a windless day.....

Like you, my .222 is a Sako L461 (pre-Garcia Bofors barrel). Enough H4895 to push a Speer TNT to 3200 fps was my initial load. When I ran out of the H4895 I switched to H335 and never looked back. At the same 3200 fps, this powder bullet combination delivers consistent sub-.5 MOA (and often better). I haven't noticed much difference in performance when switchin primers. A friend with very little shooting experience made nine consecutive hits on prairie dogs with this rifle/load.

While H335 is my powder of choice, I suspect that I could do about as well with 4198, 3031, 4064, BL-C2, Varget, VV 120, 130, 133, or 135, AC 2230, AC 2015BR, WC 844 or 846, WW 748, or any of a number of other powders. The .222 just isn't that picky.

i have a 700 rem, syntheic, aluminum insert, try using nosler 40gr balistic tips and 23 grains of BLC (2). 10 shot group less than a dime at 100 hundred yards. Try you'll like it.

Hei!

I had a Sako Vixen in .222 which gave very good presicion with the 52 gr Sierra HPBTM and 24,5-25 gr of Vihtavuori N-140. Remington case, which im fact holds a litle bit more powder than the Norma cases. The Vhitavuori N-140 is normaly regarded as solw for the the .222 Rem, but it fills the case perfectly when giving max velocity and pressure. I tryed a lot of other bullets, but no one gave the same presiscion in my gun.

My 222 like many 222 rifles is one fine shooting easy to tune varmint rifle. Three powders gave me my best groups, but the 222 will shoot very well with several other powder bullet combinations. My 222 likes H-322, IMR-4895, Benchmark with 45, 50, and 53 grain bullets.
In my view if your 222 rifle will not give close to 1/2" 100 yard groups with H-322 powder that 222 rifle has a serious problem other than load developement.
It should be noted that the 222 Remington cartridge still holds the world record 5 shot group measured at .009. The shooter who posted that record group was Mac McMillan and he did that when he was 59 years old with his custom made 222 Benchrest rifle.

In a Sako 75:

Nosler 50gr BT
21.7gr VVN130
CCI small rifle primer
(Norma brass)

I have started working up loads with VVN133 and also 52gr A-max. Some very promising groups, but I am beginning to stray into compressed load territory.

My most accurate 222 rem. load in a winchester mod. 70 and a sako vixen is:
Rem case , cci bencrest pr., 21.2 gr. Norma 200, 55gr. sierra Gameking , AOL. 55mm.
This is in my opinion an exceptional load as it will not only make small groups but also makes a very good roe deer load and all that at a very reasonable price. I have tried more expensive bullets i.e. Barnes x , nosler Part (60 gr.) with no luck. I did make the nosler ball. tip. shoot well with the same load but i never use it as it is much easier to use just one load ,as this one with the gameking can be used for practice , competition and hunting.

RWS case, 24,0 grain Vihta N133, 50 gr. Sierra SPT, I guess #1330, out of an Anschtz rifle shoots really well. Then, out of this rifle nearly everything shoots well...

Have a 40XBR with a 1-10 twist with 52 grain bullets and shoots the best groups with AA2230. Good Luck
