I know the N160 is a tad faster than N165, and you can't go wrong by filling the case with N165 as far as pressure goes, but I'm wondering if I could drive bullets faster with the 500-series variant of N160 without the resulting pressure of the latter powder? And where would RL-22 fit in with N560, N165, and N160?

I'm playing with 139-grain SSTs. I've posted elsewhere for information about loads, but I thought I'd post over here, too.

I maxed out the 30 06 AI/200 grs Nosler Part. with N165 at 2720 fps. The N560 (62grs)gave 2800 fps with the same bullet. I'm cautiously increasing the load for the sake of testing, as I find 2800 fps sufficient. N160 gives higher pressures in the AI although the burning rate is close to N560. You can't really compare N500 series powders with others; they are very sensitive to case form and capacity, I think. Be careful.

Russell. N560 is the clear choise for top velocity in my 7mmRem Mag of the three Vihtavuori powders. My tests are very incomplete in 30-06, and 338 Lapua mag, but N560 appears to beat the others in these as well as in the 7RM. Never tried RL. AKI

My favorite all around load for my .280 AI (Remington 700 KS Mountain Rifle w/ a 24" HART stainless barrel) is 60.5gr of Reloader 22, 140gr Nosler BT, and Federal Match primers. I get 3073fps out of that with a 3 shot group of .212" this week. Not too shabby from a mountain weight hunting rifle. Hope it helps.

I get the most velocity with Norma MRP and Reloader 22 in my 280 Ackley. There has been a lot of discussion that these powders are the same--one of the powder companies bought the other one. I load 64g MRP behind the 140g Sierra and this is safe in my rifle;it will stay right with my 7mm mag.

What would be a practical starting load for RL-22? It's a custom-built rifle and it's "sound." I understand I don't want to start at the top end of the scale, per se, but I don't need to start at the bottom end, either. I'm inclined to lean toward the starting loads for 7mm Remington Magnum. Thoughts?

In my rifle the Nosler max load of 60.5g of Re22 behind a 140g was pretty mild.I have never seen a 270 that would not shoot 60g H4831 behind a 130g,so it would seem with a larger bore and an improved version that this should be a good place to start.
