I shoot cast bullets out of a .458WM. In fact, that's about all I shoot out of it.

I would be interested in what success you've had with the .458.

Thanks for any information!

Ruger #1, 458WM, Lyman 485 or there abouts GC boolet. Max loads, some minor leading sometimes. Also use the 410 grain for plinkers. Use mostly 4064 and my own mix of Alox and beeswax (50/50). Hard (mystery) alloy, air hardened.

Iron sights, can hit quart OJ bottle lid at 75 yards supported.

Most folks find these loads abusive, they are.

Love to hear of your .458 and .45-70 loads. (I've not had much accuracy luck with .45-70 in NEA.)

Not yet. I did pick up a Lyman 500 gr mold for my 458 Lott, but haven't had a chance to work up any loads. Guess I need to get some gas checks and a .459" sizer. I'm looking for an 1800-2000 fps load for the 500 gr pill.

My Ruger No. 1 in 458 Win mag will outshoot my No. 1 in 45-70 (or most of my other 45-70s) using cast bullets, at least at the 50 yard range I have tested it at so far.

I used a 355 gr gas checked Old West bullet, 25% type/75% wheelweight, 26 gr 2400. Groups usually under 1" with no leading.

I may have tried some heavier bullets but didn't see any notes concerning it. I generally get best CB accuracy using IMR 4198, 4759, and 2400. IMR 3031 and AA 5744 have been disappointments so far as accuracy, at least in my experience.

I shoot paper patched bullets out of my 458. Wheel weights wrapped in two layers of onion skin paper. Full speed with 2 inch groups at a hundred. Still kicks like a Missouri mule.

Scrollcutter, I guess that makes you talented and wise! Montana Precision Swaging makes some lovely bullets for the .45 bore if you'd like some. 540 grs. in onion skin over about 30 gr of RX7 makes a mild load for the 45-70 with the cupped base version, around 1300 fps. Bump it up a bit to 1600 fps and you'll have a small dinosaur duster, but the recoil in a levergun starts to get to be all I want. MOA with an 1895 Cowboy gun.

Rugerlott,
I have a 458 Ackley.
I would appreciate any 458 Lott loads you could send me.
Thanks - Lew
