Maktoum was trying to hunt a buffalo with a bow. The buffalo were not co-operating. He used to come every evening, telling us he got just short of the range he wanted to be for a shot. We, on the other hand, we’re hunting with a rifle. Where distances are really immaterial. I shot 3 bulls, which would have been perfectly placed for a bow hunter!!?? We were driving along, and our driver stopped the truck. We thought there was a log on the road - quite a few times this happened, as elephants break them and they fall on the road. Our driver was pointing with his fingers ahead of the truck. Amazingly, not 30 yards away, 2 old bulls were standing under a tree, totally ignorant of our presence. Off the truck, and a few minutes later one was in the bag. Is hot him walking away. The bullet hit him in the rear of the stomach, went through his chest, and lodged in the shoulder on the other side. Now, what are the chances of this very thing happening again?? Well, it did 3 days later! Everything to the last detail including bullet placement!!?? We were all scratching our heads about it. A few days later, we found the tracks of a herd and decided to follow it - last buffalo on quota for me. We were walking in an open valley. Our two trackers on the tracks. Alan, Roy and me a few yards to the side. Out of nowhere, an old bull comes out of the forest walking straight for us. 20 yards away. We were in some grass, Alan sat down, and I shot the bull in the head, dropping him in his tracks!! We told Maktoum, who was most disappointed! | |||

+1  Speaking of buffalo shot with the bow, I had a friend shoot a very big buffalo bull this year with the bow. 40 days later the PH found the bull and killed him-four 470 NE rifle shots later!   Next time take Maktoum with you, let him shoot a bull with the bow, and then afterwards you can kill it.   | |||

I reckon that we walked nearly forty miles, more or less, over nine days, for two great old Cape buffalo bulls earlier this year. In the past, I have also shot two dugga boys on the same day, within seconds of each other, back to back! I have learned to take 'em as we find 'em, whether slow, fast, or not at all!  Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | |||

That is the spirit. Hunt long enough, and you stop nit picking and take it as it comes. I think I must have walked thousands of miles over the years hunting elephant and buffalo. Lots of those days ended with us empty handed. | |||

Ticks! The crew were complaining ticks were sticking to them as they carried the buffalo to the truck. Alan is burning them with insect repellent! Works like a charm. I have had problems with ticks in the past. Not anymore as I use permethrin on my safari clothes before I go. Seems to work very well. | |||

Certain areas of Alberta can be bad for ticks, but luckily where I hunt I never seem to encounter the repulsive things! Interesting. | |||

We used Sony PXW Z100, which has been discontinued. Very good quality, but rather sensitive to the elements, especially dust. Also uses XQD cards for storage, which very expensive. The video files are cannot be played with any media player before processing. We use Adobe Premier Pro which works great. But if you wish to see a clip on your computer without processing it, you cannot. We have tried the Sony AX700 and are very happy with it. Only limitation is the zoom, 12X only. We are taking these for this year’s safari. Personally, I have used this model for quite sometime in my travels, and always got very good results. It also uses the much cheaper SD cards, and you can watch the clips in any video player on your computer. My recommendation is to buy very fast SD cards if you are interested in 4K videos. Processed videos in 4K are indistinguishable from each other taken by these cameras. | |||
