PH's rifles

kayakerPH's rifles
Watching Buzz Charltons ele video, I was wondering what rifle he uses? At one point it looks like a Ruger RSM? Its also looks like he is holding a .458 Lott Cartridge but then later has a bottle necked case (.416 Rigby?).
In the charge chapter he talks about a cow he gave 2 frontal head shots and says, "If I was using something with a 500gr bullet, it would have put her down..." So what does he normally use?
That got me wondering, what do most of the older/well know PH's use, guys like:
John Sharp (.470NE double?)
Nicky Blunt (.416 Rigby?)
Mark Selby (.450/.400 DR)
Johan Calitz (.470 DR)
Robin Hurt (?)
Nassos Roussos (?) and Jason Roussos
Alain Lefol (.460 WBY?)
Volker Grellmann (?)
Coenraad Vermaak (9,3?)
Lou Hallamore (?)
Johnny Vivvier (used to use a.458WM?)
Barrie Duckworth (?)
Roy Vincent (?)
Ronnie Blackbeard (?)
Jeff Rann (?)
Luke Samaras (?)
Please add others if you wish...
Oh yes, I forgot,
Geoff and Russ Broom
Tony Sanchez-Arino
Angelo Dacey
Piet Hougaard (.264 Win for PG?)
Tony Dyer
Hannes Wessels
That all I can think of now!
Cheers

bwanamrmBuzz's rifle is a Ruger RSM .416 Rigby. A particularly well-used one!

DavidCI *think* Robin hurt has double rifles in both .470 & .500 nitro as well as a .416 Remington in a CRF bolt action.

Sanchez-Arino has written he used 500 Jeffery, at least for a time.

GunsCoreI am in that Video in the tuskless cow section, the screwed up brain shot section, sighting in a rifle section and a few wanderings through Chewore North. The video of the lioness going to the Cape Buffalo carcass is the lioness I killed shortly thereafter. I am one in the black T shirt with soft brown cowboy hat. I shot too high on the frontal brain shot, but gave a quick follow up to the heart and she still dropped within five yards. Buzz uses a Ruger 416 Rigby, but thinks very highly of the 458 Lott. I used a 375 H&H, but have recently purchased a 458 Lott that I will use on my next tuskless hunt with Buzz in Oct 2007. The late season tuskless hunts is the best deal out there for dangerous game. Only $ 650 a day with the opportunity to pick up whatever is left over on license for the trophy fee. I could have also have taken a male lion and Cape Buffalo if I had wanted to. The only hitch is the heat. You can expect daily temperatures easily over 100 F.
You can borrow money, but you can't borrow time. Go now.
STAY IN THE FIGHT!
Now that you are rich movie (video) star, you should buy a copy of my book for that next brain shot.

bwanamrmJohn Greeff Westley Richards .470 NE
Russell Lovemore Ruger RSM .416 Rigby
Ridge Taylor (deceased) William Evans .500 NE
Cash Taylor Westley Richards .470 NE
Eugene Visagie was a Brno .458 Lott now a Kreighoff .470 NE
Brad Rolston... hell he can answer for himself when he gets back in from the bush but I think it was a Brno .500 A2!

This conclusion is drawn after his observation of about 50 one shot kills with my .458 Lott. But there are two additionel requirements: perfect shot placement and a special FN bullet (Superpenetrator).

BwannaKirk Mason and Dudley Rogers - .500 Jeffery
Peter Chipman of Zambia: 470 NE Merkel double

This choice came subsequent to the lion charge.
Ronnie McFarlane in Botswana, for Okavango buffalo and elephant: Original John Rigby .416 Rigby Magnum Mauser, given to him as a birthday present by Pop, Ian.
Basie Riekert of RSA and Botswana:
Standard Mauser 98 .375 H&H, made by RSA gun mechanic, and a
475 No.2 Nitro Express 3-1/2", and I forget the maker of this double.
These three guys are at least in the same league as Ganyana.

shakariAdding to the list, I use a .500 Jeffery as does my buddy Pierre Van Tonder.
also
Colin Kirkham (Bots) - .458 - 3 inch Stewart

kayakerThanks all...
Anyone hunted with the French guys in Cameroon, Benin, CAR etc ? Eg Alain Lefol?
Cheers

MacD37Peter Chipman, used to use a 458 Mauser, till the lion got on him, he now uses a Merkel 470NE double rifle.
Simon Eldredge uses a BRNO 375H&H
Russ Broom uses a 470NE double rifle (MAKE???)
O Banion use a 470NE double rifle
Andew Dawson use a 470NE double rifle
Jeff Rann uses a 500NE double rifle
Gordon Cundell shoots a 500NE double rifle
Jaco Du Plesiss (spl?) before he was lost in a plane crash, used a Krieghoff 470NE double rifle.
Luke Samaras used a double rifle most of his career, but lately has started carrying a lighter bolt rifle, Caliber ???? I guess he is getting old, like most of us, and the weight of his rifle matters more than anything!
All these guys had bolt rifles as well, but usually used for meat gathering, most chambered for 375 H&H

jstevensSince I shoot one a lot, it is interesting to me that at least with the PH's using bolt rifles, the RSM Rugers in .416 and .458 Lott seem to be pretty popular. Most of them seem to be shooting RSM's, Mausers, and Brno's.
A shot not taken is always a miss
29 July 2006, 22:22
MacD37I agree the RSM seems to be a lot of rifle for the money, and if a PH can't afford a double the RSM is a real nice alternative! The BRNO rifles are probably the most common single brand of bolt rifle in Africa. A few yers ago, almost evey PH that used bolt rifle had a pair of the BRNO 602s one in 458 win mag, and the other in 375H&H. A lot od the 458s have been rechambered to 458LOTT, today. These rifles were reasonably priced, and very well made, reliable rifles!
Many of the Mauser actioned rifles are old, and most have been re-barrelsed a few times. The Ruger RSM is probably the new most used rifle by PHs today, and I think their numbers will only increase. Many of the RSMs are 375H&H, and 416 Rig, but most in the future will be 458 LOTT, the new hot boy in Africa's DGR field!

ShumbaMike Payne uses a 404 Jeffery.
As Will pointed out, Ian Gibson does use a 458 Win Mag. It is an older M70 Push Feed model. The finish on the wood is gone as is all of the blue. It looks like a stainless steel barreled action in a 2x4. However, that rifle is absolutely deadly in his hands.

TerryRGlen Munger - Botswana - used a BRNO 458 win mag
He was planning to get it converted to 458 Lott, I expect that he has by now.
TerryR
Roy Vincent uses a Weatherby Mk 5 with either a 460 Weatherby or a 416 Weatherby barrel.
He has also used a 585 Nyati a few times he had built himself. Roy is a qualified gunsmith and does a lot of work on other PH guns.
His son Alan uses a 450 Ackley, built by his father.
30 July 2006, 10:41
500grainsIt kinda sounds like Harry Manners was the last guy to use a .375 H&H.
And at the other end, Mark Sullivan seems to be the onl guy using a .600.

Mike Taylor; custom Brno 458LOTT.
Charlie Stanton; Cogswell&Harison? 375H&H.

Peter Wood; Winchester CRF and Brno 458LOTT & AUCKLY?.
Myles McCallum;Ruger 416Rig.

Ian Gibson; Winchester PF 458Win & Rem 416Rem.
Jonathan Taylor Winchester 458Win & Ruger 416Rig
John Greef; WR 470NE
John Sharp; 470NE
Note how Many top PH's use old Winchesters with push feed in 458WIN and are happy with them.
I have also met many guys in Zim who use the 9.3x62 for their personal hunting and back up in plains game areas.

Ah, thats only because the Westley Richards were all the poor African PHs could afford.
Now if they saved a bit more in tips instead of boozing it up in Reno they could afford nice rifles like Merkels and Searcys.

GanyanaProfessional hunting is changing, and backing up clients is becomming more common - hense the shift to bigger bore's with as ozhunter noted a preference for something smaller when hunting alone.
I have known only two nen use a heavy rifle for general purpose hunting. Glen Tathan (ex chief warden, zim parks and Ken Worsley, ex culling team leader.) Both use an F.N .458 Win for everything.
My old friend and hunting companion, Brian Marsh, who was one of the three pioneers of game ranching and first PH in Zim started off with a .404, moved to a H&H .465 double, then to a .450 Watts (.458 Lott) in the late 60's and then finally settled on a .375...
The two best charges I have seen stopped in recent years - an ele at 2 paces and a buff at 3 were both stopped by Gordon Duncan with his .375. Like his uncle- Clive Stockhill, he only uses a .375.
For stopping an ele, penetration and shot placeement beat power every time- look at Mike La Grange (ballistics in perspective) Art Alphin designed the 460 Short just for mike, but I never saw him shoot any animal with anything other than his 30-06 ( Used a Garand- A Square made him thousands of mono's for the culls in 30-06. There were still 11,000 in stock last time I looked!)
For buffalo- bigger is better.
It also depends on the terrain you hunt in.
