Is Reno in the backwoods of America?? clap

You may not have a car but perhaps you can hitch a ride somehow to Carson City. The Nevada state museum has a very interesting natural history and firearms exhibit. At least there was years ago.

I think there is also a mining exhibit.

There might even be daily bus service.

Mike

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Lake tahoe is gorgeous and there is skiing but you'll need a car. There is the automobile museum in reno. Plenty of sightseeing out of town but again you will need a car. Shows at different casinos.

I have always been out in Sep. for the air races but i would love to go during winter.

You could go to Animal Artistry have a tour of there shop and visit with Mike. that will take up half a day and i like it, it is always different and they will be setting up displays for the show. They do some really nice work.

If you like, a drive to Lake Tahoe would be in order, they have a few nice places to eat and if you would like to ski they have rentals on the south side.

I am not sure if fishing is in your plans, as they offer guided fishing at lake Tahoe, chance for a big Lake Trout. That would be a great time if you like fishing, it would be cold, however nice.

Drive West and you could go to San Francisco for the bridge, but one big bridge is like another. not a big deal. Plus you could check out some wine makers if you go this way.

Sacramento, has a few museums that may interest you.

I am not sure how driving in the Red Woods would be in January, however that could be a nice trip.

Carson City is a nice day/half day trip. do a Internet search and see if there is something you would like to see or look at.

Nothing north or east that i can think of that would interest you. I drive through and stay in Reno every year, and cannot think of any thing i would suggest in those areas.

The casinos will have floor entertainment and you could take in some if you think you would like them.

I do believe that there are still some movie / TV sets still set up for tours, again look on line to see if they may interest you.

Andrew,

What constitutes a few days? A lot of the exhibitors will be there Monday to start setting up Tuesday so there may be some of your mates around. I think the suggestion to visit Mike Boyce's taxidermy studio is a great one. He runs a big and well funded operation. Call ahead and make an appointment. I would think he'd love to show around a Zambian PH who might give him some referrals. Rent a car for a day and just see what rural Nevada looks like. Other than the few cities that are here there just ain't many people in Nevada. You might be surprised at mile after mile of open barren country. I find the country beautiful including the desert around here in Las Vegas.

Have fun!

take your machine gun about 20 miles down the first dirt road and just shoot it while spinning in a circle.
you ain't lived until you cant hit anything [literally] or cause any damage to anything with a firearm.

it's also a good chance to check your hearing by listening to your watch go tick, tick, tick.

if you rent a car make sure it has satellite radio, the heater works, and is capable of going at least 80 MPH.

Lusaka. Any variation adds large amounts of dollars or extensive overlays in airports. Problem this was a last minute decision from our end.

Are you staying in Dubai for a layover?

There's no shortage of watering holes that you could visit and categorize on a scale of 1-10.

You might even venture to the outskirts and view the game parks. Big Grin

Tahoe's cute 'n all, but Pyramid Lake is genuine, especially if you are a trout fisherman.

Then they're are the petroglyphs in Lagomarsino Canyon. And Virginia City.

And all else that appeals to real people, outside of a casino foyer.

you ain't visiting any lakes in the Sierra's in January unless you really just wanna see a flat white sheet of snow.
or what 20' deep snow looks like.

you can look out your window in Reno, squint your eyes and pretend the flat white salt plain is snow without all the extra cold.

The main body of Lake Tahoe does not freeze. The stored heat in the Lake's massive amount of water compared to its relative surface area prevents the Lake from reaching freezing temperature under the prevailing climatic conditions.

IJL is correct. Pyramid Lake is a great visit, and full of Lahontan Cutthroat if you are inclined to fish. On the north end of the lake are some neat tufa formations and hot springs, though I understand they've fenced the hot springs since I lived there. Lake Winnemuca has some wonderful petroglyphs, though I understand they are also now fenced so you can look but not approach. The petroglyphs are quite old by north american standards, though not by African or European standards.

I forgot how deep it was.
I understand it has the record for the lake with the most unrecovered bodies on the planet though.
