There was a thread a while back stating that the convention location changed from Reno to Vegas but Reno is still listed as the location for 2021 on the SCI website. Can anyone help straighten this out?

Safari Club pulling out of Reno for 2021 convention, back in Vegas a year early

Jason Hidalgo, Reno Gazette Journal Published 10:21 a.m. PT Aug. 22, 2019 | Updated 3:20 p.m. PT Aug. 22, 2019

Reno just lost another major convention early once again.

Safari Club International will pull out of Reno for its 2021 convention, one year earlier than its initial three-year agreement. Safari Club will still hold its scheduled convention in Reno in 2020.

Safari Club’s has yet to officially announce the change in venue, which was confirmed by the RSCVA in response to a query by the Reno Gazette Journal on Thursday after receiving a tip about the change in plans. Safari Club also notified the city of Reno in July of its intent to pull out of the third year of its agreement. The RGJ has reached out to Safari Club International for comment.

"It’s always disappointing to lose business and we never like see business go but we respect their decision to cancel and we’re happy to have those two years with us," said Bob Lucey, chairman of the RSCVA board. "We've always had a good relationship with Safari Club International and that relationship continues."

The move follows the early departure of Interbike, which initially entered a five-year deal to hold its convention in Reno from 2018 to 2022. Interbike, however, canceled its convention entirely after one year when the move to Reno from Las Vegas failed to turn around its declining numbers. The event's future remains in doubt after its top executives left and organizers announced that there will be no show for 2019.

Safari Club will continue to hold its annual convention, opting to return one year early to Las Vegas. It is not the first time that Safari Club has opted to end an agreement with Reno. The organization was supposed to hold its event in Northern Nevada in 2015 before pulling out, citing insufficient air service.

Safari Club eventually returned to Reno this year following a five-year absence and declining attendance in Las Vegas. The return to Reno, however, was not enough to stem the tide. More than 15,000 attendees took part in this year’s convention, down from more than 18,000 for the 2018 show.

Safari Club’s fortunes mirror a steady drop in hunters over the years. In the United States alone, the number of hunters fell by 2.2 million from 2011 to 2016, according to the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Survey of Hunting, Fishing, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation.

"It's a challenge because the membership, in that regard, is aging," Lucey said. "The younger demographic just isn't taking to trophy hunting like the older demographic had."

Despite the continued drop in attendance numbers, Safari Club International President Paul Babaz described the return to Reno as a “roaring success.” Babaz added that Safari Club was looking forward to “an even bigger and better SCI Convention” for 2019.

The loss of what has historically been the biggest trade show held in Reno is a big blow for the city’s convention business. Despite the reduced attendance, the event generated an estimated $20 million in economic impact for Reno-Tahoe, including more than 17,000 room nights for the region’s hotels, according to the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. The actual numbers are projected to be even higher because the numbers did not include rooms that were booked outside of the event’s contracted room blocks.

RSCVA President and CEO Phil DeLone, who used to head the Safari Club prior to taking his current post a couple of years ago, is not ruling out a return of the event to Reno in the future. In addition to 2015, Safari Club also canceled its Reno show in 2010 but the event came back each time.

"History shows that even when they cancel, they realize what a great site Reno is," DeLone said. "They will be back."

George,

Called in my SCI membership renewal a few days ago and mentioned the show moving back to Vegas in '21. They confirmed that it was as I expected but offered that the '19 show was not very good on many fronts which I did not expect.

George,

I've had good shows in Reno but to answer your question no after several years here in Vegas I was not anticipating a great show. First guy I ran into up there in '19 that I knew said "This place is a hole". I had to agree.

Good to know.I hope it is at the Mandalay Bay and not at the Convention centre. From now on whenever it's in Vegas I am going to stay a day or two longer.I am not sure if I will attend otherwise and will consider DSC instead.

SCI Convention Returns to Las Vegas in 2021 – Will Kick Off 50 Years of SCI

U.S.A. –-(Ammoland.com)- Safari Club International has announced that the 49th International Hunters’ Convention will return to Las Vegas, Nevada, February 3-6, 2021. The event will serve as the kickoff celebration of 50 years of SCI, the leading hunting advocacy organization established in 1971.

The exhibits and daytime activities will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Exhibits will be set up in the central halls of the facility. Meetings and daytime banquets will also all be held at the LVCC.

Evening events at the 2021 SCI Convention will be held at Caesar’s Forum, a new venue in the Caesar facilities that is currently under construction.

The headquarter hotel will be Harrah’s Casino Hotel. Other block hotels will include the LINQ Hotel and Casino, Flamingo Las Vegas, Bally’s Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood and Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas. All the hotels are in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip.

“We are pleased to be able to bring the SCI Convention back to Las Vegas in 2021,” said Laird Hamberlin, SCI CEO. “Our exhibitors and members all enjoy the convenience of getting in and out of Las Vegas and the many activities to enjoy there in addition to the Convention. Many people expressed a desire to move the Convention back to Las Vegas with dates in early February. We have worked hard to make it happen.”

SCI looks forward to seeing you in Las Vegas in 2021.

Wow! New Orleans would be a great site. The new airport is awesome, it's only a short ride to downtown, and there are lots of well priced hotels within walking distance or a 5 minute Uber of the convention center. Plus, the food options are limitless.

With the exception of Caesars, those are not the best hotels. They could not block reserve the Wynn or the Venetian complex. NOLA is a great location, that’s one I would attend.

I was hoping it would not say "Las Vegas convention centre". That ruined the last SCI convention in Vegas and started the downfall,IMO.Mandalay is a million times better.

And I hope none of you are going to be wearing bikinis!

I remember seeing at least one of the above mentioned individuals in a bikini, and I can assure you it most certainly does nothing to one's libido! rotflmo
