Just heard legendary East African Hunter Anthony (Tony) Dyer has passed away. Was one of the last Presidents of the EAPHA. Ran the Borana Ranch for both cattle and wildlife post 1977 Kenya hunting ban.
I have a book he authored “Men for all Seasons” which he chronicled the history of EA hunting.

Condolences to all his friends and family, I remember articles about him from back in the 60's and 70's.

Makes us all feel our mortality.

Another great one goes to the happy hunting grounds. Hope to join them all some day around the eternal campfire.

Ladies, gentlemen: go on safari now before you're called home. It's closer than you think. Borrow money if you have to. My first safari took me three years to pay off. Worth every penny. Been back (7) more times as my finances improved.

Good hunting Mr. Dyer.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Beautiful Poem.

It is now 40 years since the EAPHA disbanded. There are now maybe a handful of former members.

When we loose an Mzee, my mind is drawn to the funeral scene of Deny's Finch-Hatton in "Out of Africa". The vastness of the Athi Plains stretching out from the Ngong Hills. Today the Finch-Hatton grave sets in the middle of a Kikuyu shamba. The view is Nairobi. There is a reason we don't live forever.......

The death of another "old Kenya hand".

I've only seen the EAPHA badge once, in person, it was on Mike Rowbotham's old felt hat.

that was in 1987.

Andrew: Thanks for sharing the poem. Beautiful and comforting words from the poet, and probably close to the truth. Who knows?

Ailsa: Couldn't agree more. Even if aging wasn't part of the equation, in all honesty and reality, wouldn't it be a burden to live forever? Unless you're God...

In my own personal value system, I think Mr. Dyer is in a better place than he has ever been.
