As we head towards uncertain times, we have to reflect on our future in the Safari industry.

There are a couple of threads running on the political pro's and con's of the new liberal administration coming in, and how high they put our sport on their dark list. So I will not venture into the abyss of speculating about this topic.

However, as I am bombing out super special deals for hunts after we opened up, I keep wondering:

1. Will you take a vaccine for Covid to enable your entry into a country

2. Will you travel in January, February, March to hunt? Its green and its different but it is fantastic. A Lot of Europeans prefer hunting then.

3. The direct flights between US and SA is only resuming in March by the sound of it. But the connecting flights are CHEAP now. Will you hunt without your own rifles because it is cheap to hunt and cheap to fly?

4. How much of a "hand break" is the virus for the traveling hunter?

Folks, I will not lie. We are bleeding, the whole industry, and we need your support to revive it.

Without the traveling hunter the wild life is doomed. So while all the posh liberal anti hunting parties plan our demise, can we at least be pro active and support what we have now and what we can save now?

When we are strong as a collective we can fight them, but make no mistake, on this side of the pond we are weak.

I trust all of you are well, and me and Erika would like to wish each of y'all a blessed Thanks Giving and festive season.

I went to Zambia this past October, flew cheap on Ethiopia Airlines and used a camp rifle. I will keep coming back...vaccine or no vaccine. Good luck hanging on till things get back to normal.

Infinito,
1. Yes.
2. No, not Jan, Feb, Mar. 2021. Vaccine won't be available for enough people. In 2022, yes.
3.No.
4. Covid 19 is big issue for me.

Have booked Namibia, my annual destination, for August, Charl. Will visit friends in Cape Town in late July.

Hope to have received Covid vaccine by April-May. Will not try to travel overseas before getting it.

Best to you and all in the industry at this difficult time, Tim

Yes

I have hunted in November, April and photo in December in Zim and would hunt January, February, and March understanding the limitations and issues.

3. The direct flights between US and SA is only resuming in March by the sound of it. But the connecting flights are CHEAP now. Will you hunt without your own rifles because it is cheap to hunt and cheap to fly?

Yes, did it in the Congo without a PH.

4. How much of a "hand break" is the virus for the traveling hunter?

I went to Alaska this year, enjoyed the trip, Africa would be the same.

The reality of the situation is business has been tough which keeps me more busy because of Covid, however I am seriously looking at a 2021 trip.

As to question one, I will have to get the vaccine to work, so it’s a nonissue as far as hunting.

With regards to 2., I have hunted over in Africa in the first 3 months of the year before, it’s not a gamechanger. Rather, availability of vacation time is.

To me, the flight availability issue is bigger. If I have to use twice as much time in transit, that is a substantial issue (layovers overnight).

Also, while having to use camp guns is not an absolute no go, it is a major hinderance in my mind. It would require a very unique hunting opportunity or a substantial price savings to go with that... not just a cheaper flight.

As far as how much a hand brake it is, personally it’s a nonissue. I have IMO, a higher risk at going to work than the travel... but I do think it’s a major issue for the majority who have to deal with “SWMBO” which I don’t.

Absolutely

No, but have trips to Zim, Moz and Namibia starting in April

No, preparing and taking my rifles is a large part of the experience for me.

Not sure what this means but a lot of people are too scared to do a damn thing...except worry

Not to hijack the thread. I have real concerns about the vaccine. There is no long term data on this thing. It is an mRNA vaccine. That type of vaccine has never been approved by the FDA before. The chief medical officer from Maderna just came out today and said that the vaccine will not prevent disease transmission, only lesson severity of illness. My old med school housemate did his infectious disease fellowship at the NIH under Dr. Fauci and he says he will not take the vaccine. He and I speak daily. So I truly don't know what the vaccine means and I will not take it even if UNC health systems demands it. I already had the real virus.

Charl,

I'm on a "Bucket list" fishing trip in July to NWT. In Oct/Nov I'm in Zambia again and Mauritius for the first time. As long as the airlines fly, we as US citizens are not locked down or not allowed in in these countries Sadie and I will be there. Fuck Covid and rental guns are fine as it is impossible to bring personal firearms to Mauritius.

Charl,

1; Yes, if I have to.

2; Yes, though not my first date preference

3; Yes, I would. Again, it would not be my preference but if that’s what it would take to hunt, so be it.

4; while the virus has been an impediment, I’m not particularly concerned about it. I’ll take my chances.

So far, I know I’ll be hunting with Alan Vincent in Tanzania. Also expect to take my son on a moose hunt in Wyoming. Beyond that, I’ll wait and see what opportunities present themselves. I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let this virus stop me from living an adventurous life.

Hi Charl - I have just returned to SA from Texas
Had to have a covid test day before we flew. Flew on AA and BA from San Antonio, Dallas, London, JHB, Nelspruit all in one hit - long delays and lay overs between legs, with airport lounges closed so no showers etc but virtually empty planes so lots of room. Only real hassle was having to wear a mask for almost 48 hrs. Not sure how the airlines will be able to keep afloat - on the one leg there were less than 80 passengers on a 500 seat plane!

Good morning Charl,

1. Yes. It appears that you will need to for air travel, so when it becomes available it will be added to my yellow card.

2. I have hunted in March before. We selected those dates so it would fit in with others vacation dates that they were able to get. Only thing is is that the bugs are in larger numbers.

3. Yes, we have travel plans to Europe, however right now it is not looking promising. It is my wife's year to pick places to go and see.

4. Being in the target group, we are taking precautions to protect ourselves, until a working vaccine is available. Covid virus is having some issues, and my cardio doctor came down with it from a patient (patient and his wife both passed on). He was in ICU for 3 1/2 months, is currently in rehab and we are hoping that he will be back to work in another 6 month to a year. We have a friend who has lost an aunt and niece to the virus. so it is real and hitting close to home.

Other family members have caught the virus at work, however they are recovering.

Currently I am looking at different web auctions to bid on items and hunting opportunities. If I pay closer attention, I just may win the bidding on a hunting trip.

Other than that, I am chatting with my African friends, looking at doing on a hunt for different animals. Checked on a rifle I have had on order for my expanded trophy selection. Looking forward to picking it up in 2021.

Not sure if future trophies will be brought home, I am looking at maybe having a professional videographer doing my venture.

Possibly if a vaccine is ready by then. Also depends upon the weather. I hate hunting in the rain or in real hot weather.

I'll be turning 74 in a week so I'm concerned about Covid. Hence my wanting a vaccine before traveling. Not sure exactly what you mean by "hand break."

I fear that it will be a severe handbrake for older folks. You know the ones with the time and the money.....

Of course. On the other hand maybe this will weed out some of the "fly by night competition"...... Looking for a silver lining to this dark cloud.....

No, I won’t take the vaccine. I do not trust the CDC or Fauchi or any company that is pad billions to rush a vaccine without true trials.

I will go back when this virus becomes a non-event and countries are truly open.

I will go when I don’t have to wear a mask.

I understand the hunting business is in a bind. I work for an oil company. We just laid off 10,000 people and are losing money daily.

Even with all the doom and gloom, I will go back when there is no risk to being quarantined anywhere.

Who is giving the vaccine? I will only take an American or Western European produced vaccine from a pharma company that I know.

2. Will you travel in January, February, March to hunt? Its green and its different but it is fantastic. A Lot of Europeans prefer hunting then.

March yes, the rest of the year is too hot.

3. The direct flights between US and SA is only resuming in March by the sound of it. But the connecting flights are CHEAP now. Will you hunt without your own rifles because it is cheap to hunt and cheap to fly?

Eh, prefer to hunt with my own rifles. But it isn't a big deal if you have good rifles and good scopes.

4. How much of a "hand break" is the virus for the traveling hunter?

Not travelling until it is over. Turned down a free whitetail buck hunt 6 hours away in West Texas, just because of the Coronavirus concern, not getting on an airplane until I have anti-virus and so does the majority of the world.

I have had the distinct pleasure of living through emergencies in 2nd and 3rd world nations, I am good until 2022.

I wish everyone the best during these difficult times.

1.) Yes (Although I had the illness early on,
the hospital systems will vaccinate me anyway)

2.)Unlikely, too much happening here to break away early in the year.

3.)Have used my own rifle most trips.
Prefer the non-stops.

4.)Everyone decides what their own risk aversion level is-- for me No,
1st as I said I've had it,
second the numerous diseases that Africa has to offer the traveler
should give them even greater pause.

Just a touch of info on the virus injections.

Buddy in the UK has been in the testing of that
stuff a few months. Believe he's had two inj
so far and done.

Novamax brand is the name of it. It's a US brand.
Blood draw once a week for a year and that's sent
to Maryland lab.

Both times it gave him severe joint pains for
over a week. Something to be aware of is why I'm posting this info.

BIL caught the CV in Feb, worked him over hard
for most of three months.

Best wishes to everyone.

1. Will you take a vaccine for Covid to enable your entry into a country - Short answer NO unless I am forced to by the airlines to fly anywhere, like QANTAS is doing. I will look for airlines that does not require one, if that's even going to be possible. There has never been a successful RNA vaccine. And the last attempt did not go very well.

2. Will you travel in January, February, March to hunt? Its green and its different but it is fantastic. A Lot of Europeans prefer hunting then. - If I can find a reasonable B-Class Fare to Zambia I will.

3. The direct flights between US and SA is only resuming in March by the sound of it. But the connecting flights are CHEAP now. Will you hunt without your own rifles because it is cheap to hunt and cheap to fly? - depends on the make and condition of the "camp rifle" and scope.

4. How much of a "hand break" is the virus for the traveling hunter? - Just finding flights with reasonable fare.

1. Yes I will take a vaccine once it is proven although since I almost died from it and have the antibodies I don’t see the point.

2. Yes I would hunt that early.

3. I would use your rifles because I know the quality of what you have.

4. The only hand brake for me is getting strong enough to come hunt.
